P: Gen Remove now changes elements outside the painted mask

Explorer ,
Aug 13, 2025 Aug 13, 2025

The update to the Generative Remove AI model in Lightroom Classic 14.5 has ruined it, as it now changes elements outside the painted mask, making it more or less unusable in many situations.

I highlighted a few hairs under her mouth and on bottom lip for AI to remove. No teeth were highlighted.
Now she is missing teeth, bruised, and AI added a gold tooth!!
Don't judge, took pic with cell of computer screen.

I'm on Windows, using Classic, so your results might vary, but uninstall your current version and install version 14.4. The generative remove works fine in that version.

I do think that it is a bit outrageous that they cannot solve this issue. They are pushing for us to use Ai in Firefly EVERY single time i talk to them and yet they cant fix this. I am not a fan of Ai but i will say it can sometimes be so helpful when it comes to removing distractions.

WHAT I FOUND TO BE HELPFUL:

I primarily shoot automotive so it may not be AS beneficial for others that have people in their photos. What i currently do is ZOOM in pretty close to what i want to have removed and SELECT THE OBJECT BUT NOT IN ITS ENTIRETY. For example, if i have to remove the numbers/letters from a license plate, i will zoom into the Number 4 and MASK WITHIN THE PARAMETERS of the number 4 itself without going outside the number. Think of it like coloring within the lines in a coloring book. This will leave some parts above and below the number 4 unmasked and when you hit generate, it should edit the unmasked parts (because of the bug). Its a bit more tedious but it does work (for the most part)

Im sure if i download an older version than the current, that it shouldnt have any issues but i do not know which version the bug came about unfortunately

I uninstalled 14.5 Classic and reverted to 14.4 using Creative Cloud. The problems went away.

**Version/Platform:** Lightroom Classic 14.5.1 on macOS.

**Steps to reproduce:**
1. Open a portrait photo and select the AI Remove tool.
2. Paint over fine wrinkles on a person's forehead (just the wrinkles, careful not to cover the eyes or eyebrows).
3. Click "Apply" to let Generative Remove fill in the masked area.

**Expected result:** The tool should remove or soften the selected wrinkles and fill in the area with natural skin texture while leaving nearby features untouched.

**Actual result:** Instead of removing the wrinkles, the tool replaces them with deeper, more pronounced wrinkles or other textures. It often ignores the painted area boundaries and alters nearby features like the eyes and eyebrows, turning them into unnatural or distorted shapes. This makes the removal unusable for subtle skin retouching.

I have tried expanding the mask and toggling settings, but the issue persists. Others have reported the tool hallucinating unrelated objects or textures. Is this regression being addressed? Are there any workarounds beyond downgrading to 14.3.1? Thank you.

With respect to changing elements outside of the selected area, a fair number of people have complained about this change introduced in LR 14.5, and Adobe has acknowledged the issue and said they are investigating:

Unfortunately, they rarely indicate ahead of time if/when they will address an issue.

Many of us are uninstalling 14.5 and reinstalling 14.4 using Creative Cloud. Easy and works great.

yes this is a RANT. So I stupidly upgraded lightroom to 14.5 thinking after a few months and so many people experiencing this issue they would have resolved it. But NO I have to roll back again. I AM PAYING TOP DOLLAR TO USE THIS PRODUCT. ADOBE DO THIS EVERYTIME. WE SHOULD BE GIVEN A FEW MONTHS ADDED TO OUR SUB FOR THIS. SHAMEFUL EVIL COMPANY.

Amen. Crazy they haven't fixed this yet. Totally unusable as is. Sticking to 14.4 until I hear there's a fix.

I just updated LRC. Generative remove previously worked well for me but now it is editing areas outside of the area I select. For example, a child has a bruise on his forehead, I highlight over and slightly around it... the results it gives me all affect the way his eyes look also. In another pic, there is a sun spot on the mom's face right below her mouth. I highlight the area just around the sun flare and it keeps messing with her teeth. None of the options I'm generating look natural.

KlaneH - Many of us are using Creative Cloud to uninstall 14.5 and reinstall 14.4 where Generative Remove works as it should.

November is just around the corner and we still have no update. This thread was started in August!!!

In fact, I just updated Lightroom on my phone, hoping it would solve the issue but it made matters worse.
I am slowly losing my patience.

Why are only experts in this thread who have no idea what on earth is going on at Adobe? What type of customer support is this? It's not like every single one of us is paying top dollar for this application...

It's so disappointing to see that this major issue still hasn’t been fixed in Lightroom 15.0. It has actually become even worse — and on top of that, the performance is now extremely slow.

The team has identified the issue, but the fix wasn't included in the Lightroom Classic v15 release. It'll arrive soon, as this issue goes beyond Lightroom Classic and also requires broader fixes in Camera Raw.

We appreciate your continued patience in this.

Thanks!

@Sameer K

That’s great news — I’m really glad to hear that a fix is on the way.

When a major problem with an important tool in Lightroom is reported by several users, it’s essential not only to communicate that it’s being investigated, but also to let users know as soon as possible once it has been acknowledged as an issue that will be fixed. Doing so helps your customers feel confident and reassured, and makes them wait for the solution with much more patience. Good communication is very important, and I believe there’s still room for improvement in this regard — especially when it takes more than two months before users are informed that the issue has been recognized.

With the newest update it seems to have become even worse - not only changing outside the painted area but making very weird looking elements instead that do not blend in or look realistic at all. This is a major issue that has been ongoing for months now. I hope it will be fixed in the next update!

Hi,
I’m running into a significant issue with the Remove tool that started after the 14.1 update and is still happening in v15.

The tool is now editing far outside the brushed area, even when the selection is extremely small. I tested this multiple times, including a video where I highlighted one single pixel, and Lightroom still changed a large surrounding area I didn’t touch.

On top of that, the replacements it generates now are often so inaccurate that they’re unusable. Before 14.1, the tool was clean, precise, and reliable.

My system:

  • Lightroom Classic v15.x

  • macOS (latest)

Summary of what’s happening:

  • Remove tool expands or alters regions way outside the selected brush area

  • Even tiny selections (1–2 pixels) cause large unwanted edits

  • Replacement fills are now low-quality and often unusable

  • None of this happened before the 14.1 update

Questions:

  • Is this a known issue since the recent updates?

  • Are other users seeing this?

  • Is a fix or adjustment planned?

Thanks, hoping to get some clarity because this issue is consistent and easily repeatable.
