P: (GPU) Develop/Edit view & Export artifacts after 14.4.1 Update (AMD-only) (affects Cr, LrC & LrD)

Hi,

Since just now, I've been experiencing a weird bug / crash in Lightroom Classic (on a Mac), where ALL my photos suddenly are fully covered in artefacts in the Develop module.

lightroom develop module.jpg

(Screengrab from the Develop module in Lightroom Classic)

When I check the linked RAW + JPEG source files in Finder, they all seem ok (they don't look corrupted, nor show any artefacts here), meaning the issue is within Lightroom.

raw source file.jpg

(Screengrab from the RAW source file in Finder)

When I export images out of Lightroom (with any setting, edited or even not edited), the artefacts are also present on the export files.

export.jpg

(Screengrab from the exported JPG image)

This problem started occuring soon after I applied the new AI noise reduction feature on just ONE (1) photo.

I already tried:

  • Closing and re-opening Lightroom
  • Shutting down (fully), and restarting the computer after 1 minute
  • Switching the GPU accelrator setting in Lightroom on/off

MY SPECS

  • Lightroom Classic 13.0.1 - Build (202310121438-d2af310c)
  • Macbook Pro 16" - 2019
  • 2,3Ghz 8-core Intel Core i9
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB
  • 32GB 2667MHz DDR4 memory
  • OS Sonoma 14.4.1

Any help would be greatly appreciated, because this makes the whole software unusable....

Thank you!

We're investigating an issue with the macOS 14.4.1 update that affects systems running AMD series GPUs.

The issue manifests as garbling of/artifacts in images in Develop/Edit views and similar artifacts in Exported images.  The problem can afflict Camera Raw (16.2.1), Lightroom Classic (13.2) and Lightroom Desktop (7.2).  Restarting the application should restore your Develop/Edit view and return you to the expected Export results.

The team is working with the OS manufacturer to identify t

Mac OS 14.4.1 released a buggy graphics driver for the AMD 5000-series graphics processors. Adobe says they're working with Apple to address the issue. Unfortunately, some victims have reported that Mac OS 14.5 doesn't fix the problem, though I don't know if that's true for everyone.

See here for partial workarounds:

I haven't commented on this in a few days but thought I would jump in.  I understand Adobe and Radeon are working on getting this issue sorted out.  I was notified of a "Critical update" for Lightroom this morning.  There were no details on what it was (see the included image).  So, I updated to the latest version of LR and sure enough, when using Enhance to remove noise from high ISO images, it still creates these random, white, static filled boxes in various spots on the completed edit.  These artifacts appear on the preview in LR and the preview of the image on my Mac (using Preview).  When I open the edited image however, the artifacts only show up on a few of the images.  If I delete the images with the artifacts from my hard drive and from LR catalog and re-run Enhance, about 75% of the time it will process the image correctly.  This is very strange.   Does anyone actually know the details of what this update purportedly fixed?  What was the critical issue?    (Because it wasn't the radeon graphics driver issue...).  Thanks!!

Assuming, as is most likely, this is a graphics driver bug, we'll have to wait for Apple to release a new version of Mac OS containing the fixed driver. (It's conceivable that Adobe might decide to work around the bug in a new version of LR, but in general developers are very reluctant to include such workarounds, since they quickly accumulate and make the code very hard to maintain and upgrade.)

You can see what's been fixed in a release by doing the menu command Help > What's New, and then clicking "fixed bugs" near the top.

I prefer the Lightroom Queen's release notes, which are more comprehensive, detailed, and accurate and less focused on marketing fluff:

For the past few weeks I've had an issue arise where I am editing and then suddenly the image and subsequently any image I click on becomes what looks like a corrupted file. I have attched a screen shot for ref, sometimes I can just quit and restart Lr and it will be okay for a while. If I open the image in Ps via Lr it is completely fine so I believe the problem is isolated within Lr.

I would try and reinstall Lr and see if the problem persists but I'm in the middle of an important job, if I back up the catalog after quiting will this mean my work will be saved and open where I left off even if I reinstall?! (including any files that have been opened and saved back into Lr after editing in Ps?)

Hope someone can shed some light on this! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I have edited my photos in LR13.3.1.  After I exported the photos, the colour of the photos do not look the same.  The epxort photos seemed to be weired with zigzag colour (like reading an image with file rror).  It is not consistent, I sometimes have a very small file 60Kb containg a dark photo (when my originals are not dark at all).

I also deleted the old Preview data file.  But the export are still the smae (problematic)

I reset the edits in LR  and exported.   The exported files looked the same.

The exported files seem to have problems after I edited them in LR.

This may be an issue with the particular model of your Mac. To confirm that and suggest workarounds, please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

Yeah, you've got an Intel Mac with an AMD 5000-series GPU.  Mac OS 14.4.1 included a buggy graphics driver from AMD, and Mac OS 14.5 didn't included a fixed driver. See here for workarounds that have helped some users:

I have this problem with Sonoma14.5 and LR Classic 13.4 on a 2019 MBP with AMD graphics card.

I was able to clear it by turning off the GPU. Restarting LR did not help. Restarting the Mac did not help.

Yeah exact same problem, if I turn off the GPU then the issue in Lightroom is resolved but obviously the benefits of having the gpu on are lost. Hope this issues is resolved quickly 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

You probably have an older Intel Mac with an AMD GPU. Mac OS 14.4.1 released a buggy AMD graphics driver. But let's confirm -- please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

Besides restarting, another workaround is to set Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to off. Depending on your hardware, that may provide acceptable performance.

Side note - Now that I've been toggling the GFX settings, it seems that the AI functions like masking and Denoise are non functional with the GFX turned off or on images affected by this bug.  I had run batch Denoise on a number of images and some turned out fine, others had random large white blocks on the Enhanced images and AI masks applied were removed from those photos.  This is a major pain in the butt....

With GFX processing turned on, right now, it seems to be pretty consistent even with restarts, etc.  Spent an hour batch Denoising images and over half of them had artifacts so had to delete & denoise manually.   W/o gfx acceleration, the overall LR performance isn't great.  This is the first job I've done in a couple of months, so likely why I haven't seen it before.

I updated my MacOS from Monterey to Sonoma and Lightroom started giving huge artifacts when I use AI denoise.

Exmple.png

I use 2020 Imac with AMD Radeon Pro 5500.

I tried to update Lightroom, reopen it and disable graphic processor in preferences but it did not work. Computer restart also did not work. This is very annoying and from what I read here, this huge problem seems to be unsolved and the only thing I can try is probably format my Imac, lose all my apps and settings and manually install a previous OS.

I also don't know if in this case I should go back to Monterey or Ventura.

This is a known issue with AMD graphics and Sonoma. You'll have to either roll back or wait for a fix. FWIW, I'm only seeing this rarely on a 2019 MacBook Pro.
