P: Import fails when it encounters a corrupt video file

Hello, since Lrc 14/14.01 I have not been able to import images from a favourite Win 10 folder.

Its where I keep all my misc stuff I download from the net, etc.

Its called "Downloads & Software".

I try to import a jpeg and the progress bar on the top left just hangs there doing nothing.

I can import images from other folders.

I just created a new folder called 'New Folder' - and cut everything from with "Downloads and Software" and pasted it inside "New Folder".

I tried to import a jpeg and the progress bar on the top left just hangs there doing nothing.

So there is an issue that it does not want to import from the root folder - yet it imports images from subfolders.

Conversely - if I go to the root of New Folder - select an image and right-click and choose "Open With - Lightroom Classic" - it again shows the import progress bar but it just hangs.

I just put "New Folder"  into another folder - and tried to import from the root of New Folder - and I cannot.

No matter what I name that folder - or - if I cut all contents and paste into another folder - I cannot import from the root folder.

EDIT: see reply below about video files

One piece of advice- Do NOT use Nikon Transfer.  In the past it has been known to corrupt the original files. (And there was a 'fix' for that- https://exiftool.org/fix_corrupted_nef.html )

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 14.0, Photoshop 26.0, ACR 17.0, Lightroom 8.0, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 15.0.0, Windows-11.

Thanks. I no longer use that prio to using LtC exclusively.  Am exploring going back to Photo Mechanic again to try to computer, then ingest into LR

Photo Mechanic is an excellent way to "Ingest", cull then delete before "Importing" into Lightroom Classic. It's extremely fast and saves you the time required to import and create LrC previews for images that will just be deleted anyway. A win all the way around.

Is there any update or advice regarding inability to import anything through Lightroom Classic 14.01?   Ever since i upgraded to 14.0.1 I cannot import from either my iphone or my Nikon camera.   They show up in Finder and Disk Utility as connected to the computer but they don't show up as source when I try to import.    This is extremely frustrating.   I reset all of the privacy and security settings on my iphone and it didn't make any difference.   I hoped the most recent updates to IOS and MacOS this week would make a difference but they do not.   It seems to be on the Adobe side.

My problems started after the update to LrC 14.0.1 as well. Here is what I discovered and my workaround.

1. The import hanging issue for me only happens on Windows 10. Windows 11 import works as expected.

2. Rather than import using the source and target folders method, I'm using the syncronize folder option.

3. First I create a folder in Lightroom under the folder I want my imported files to go into.

4. Then from Windows Explorer, I manually put my photos from any location into that folder.

5. Then I go back to Lightroom, right click on the newly created folder with the photos, and select Syncronize Folder.

6. Then it imports as expected. I'm importing .JPG only.

7. If there are video files in the folder you are trying to syncronize, it will hang just like the import wizard does.

8. It may be necessary to close LrC while you put the files into the new folder with Windows Explorer.

Anyway, works for me. I'm buying myself a new Win 11 computer for Christmas. Now I have the perfect excuse!

Good luck.

Indeed there is a problem with Nikon Transfer 2, unfortunately I found that out after reading your post :((

I can't understand why Adobe and Nikon can't check their products properly before releasing them

I just looked at the foles in the root of the folder and saw two video files.

I deleted them. Tried to import from the root folder and yes - I successfully imported.

I have recently imported hundreds of images without problem.  However, one block of files appears to not have been imported, but apparently they have been.  They are just not showing are are not recognized as being imported.  If I press Import from this point, LrC hangs.  Files on either side of this block imported without problem and woithout hanging the program.

When exiting the program,  LrC will not close because it says it still has tasks going, but after 6 hours, nothing had changed.

I read through that thread completely and although it sounds similar I am not sure it is exactly my issue.  But, I also didn;t see a solution.  What is odd to me is that files on either side of this block imported fine and quickly - nothing slow about the import.

It looks like the next unrendered file is a video, making me suspicious that it is the issue.

I then tried to "synchronize" JUST that folder, and it worked.  Not sure why, but the removal of the video file certainly broke things loose, it appears.

I remain puzzled as to why the more normal importing was not working.  It seems like the error with one file (the video file) should be handled as a single process error, separated out, and then the rest of the process continued.  Even better would be an error message saying something to the effect that a problem with a video file was encountered ...

Also, how can files actually be imported, or appear to be imported, but not seen? When I copied into the problem folder a file that I knew had the same name as one of the files that should have been imported, I got an official Adobe LrC pop up saying that file could not be moved into that folder because a file of that name already exists in there.  They are there; they just are not showing.  All because they couldn't or weren't imported because of a video file?

Thanks, Ric, by the way !!!

Using windows 10, I encountered an issue when importing Raw photos mixed with videos, LR  does not import anything. In the import window, LR shows the previews and stops showing preview on the first video it encounters.

Fix is to move the videos under a folder and restart the dialog window.

Just gave this bug more credence this morning.  I moved the videos in a batch of new files to import and put them in another folder under the image folder.  As soon as I started to do the import, I saw that it had read the video files and included them in the intended import process, so I stopped right there.  I moved the video files' folder to above the image folder and started the import process again.  It went just fine.

So, watch out for those video files in and among your image files.  This shouldn't be a problem, but it sure appears to be.

Windows 10, Lightroom Classic v14.0.1. Just recently LrC was updated and it forced this catalog upgrade:

mothra9999_0-1731268627228.png

Since then I cannot synchronize photos to add them to my catalog. If I right click on a folder and select Synchronize I see the images are found:

mothra9999_3-1731268980400.png

Then I click Synchronize and it just hangs forever. It shows "Importing files" but just stays on this screen forever and does not actual import anything:

mothra9999_4-1731269110392.png

When I want to give up I either cancel by clicking the X in the task on the top right or close out of Lightroom:

mothra9999_5-1731269169776.png

I get this "No photos or videos were found to import":

mothra9999_6-1731269230682.png

Notes:

  • This process has been working for years and just started failing after this recent upgrade.
  • The photos are not already in the catalog (searching for a file name from the new folder does not return anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to make this work again? As it stands right now I cannot work at all on new content. Thank you!

And when trying to launch LrC often it will not open now, but I will see multiple Lightroom.exe processes in Task Manager. Force closing them allows me to open it again but something is very unhappy.

I also have similar issues with multiple Lightroom processes in the background and the app does not launch into the forerground.  When I kill all of them, it launches.  I also run into a problem importing more than 625 images.  It would just churn for a long time.  Cancelling it says nothing was imported after waiting half an hour.  I have plenty of drive space for catalog and images.

I have the same problem with Windows 10.  It was able to import a 625 files after upgrade then got stuck.  Now it appears to churn the disk during import on a different folder but nothing gets imported.
