This indicates you've got a graphics processor integrated on the main CPU chip, sharing main memory. While the minimum system requirements for LR Classic require at least 2 GB of GPU memory, that doesn't apply to integrated GPUs. Many users have reported here that the AI commands work OK (if sluggishly) on integrated GPUs, though there have been some problems reported over the last few years that couldn't be solved.
(This is just a diagnostic step, not a permanent workaround.) For reasons known only to Adobe, LR's AI commands don't obey the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor, even though it's trivial to implement.
Thanks. Object selection was indeed always a little sluggish, but other than that worked fine until a few weeks ago.
In safe mode, it seems to work fine, indeed selection occurs more quickly than I am used to. Does this mean that there is no solution, given that the "Use Graphics Processor" setting are meaningless?

In any event, I downloaded and installed it again. Version 31.0.101.2135 is definitely installed now, but the problem remains. System info below:

It looks like the recent Intel graphics drivers aren't compatible with LR, obviously. It's likely a bug in the drivers, since LR doesn't code for particular GPUs or drivers.
Adobe inexplicably doesn't have the AI commands obey Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor. They do provide this method for disabling the use of the GPU by AI:
