P: Subject Mask from previous versions are requesting an update

Community Beginner ,

After updating Lightroom Classic to v14 and converted my database, all the edited photos that had a "Subject Mask" applied now have an empty mask with a warning and exclamation mark (!).

If I let Lightroom correct the mask pushing the exclamation mark on a single photo, it seems the correct subject is selected, keeping the edits. If I do the same with multiple photos together it appears teh usual form that tells that the AI masks are recalculated, but at the end all the masks are still empty with warnings.

Greetings all,

A new update for Adobe Photography Products has been released.  The 14.0.1 update contains an update for this issue.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Thank you for being so patient.

@dewaynec

If you've previously used the workaround, no additional action is necessary.

If not, the LrClassic team recommends restoring the 13.x catalog from the "Old Lightroom Catalog" folder and re-upgrading it.

Manually update any masks that may have been updated in 14.0

It is important to restore the 13.x catalog and upgrade it using the same location as before to avoid the need to regenerate previews.

Note: If you did a lot of work in 14.0, it isn't recommended to restore from the 13.x backup.

Hi,

I cannot help it, but the new update "cooked" my previously done edits to my photos. Not sure if it is the update to 14.0, however, I noticed it afterwards after booting LR today and after the update.

Certain edits I did, seem not to exist anymore or the program/update removed them.

I noticed a red dot under the masks though.

Anyhow, pretty concerning and making me questioning the further use of the product.

Anyone else noticing something similar of suggestions on how to solve this?

Best.

I may add that the preview icons in the bottom film roll look as the old photo/edit, but once I click on the photo (in develop mode) the photo and the preview changes to (another) look. I am getting really nervous.

As of today, there is no Lr 14 (nor is there even an LrC 14). Please go the Help->System Info and provide the information down to and including the plugins (but we don't need or don't want anything beyond that)

Regardless, show us screen captures of these photos. Use the "Insert Photos" icon to include screen captures in your reply. Do NOT attach files.

I can't comment on 14, but red dot under the masks button indicates that the mask need to be updated.  'Update AI Setting's can be found under the Develop module Settings menu.

Can't comment on the problem, but I installed LrC14 yesterday along with PS 26 and Camera Raw 17.
The What's New web page is not updated yet though.

Yes, I still have the new version. Anything else would be disaster since the Lightroom upgrade included a catalogue upgrade as well.

And yes, I'm in Norway. Found the new version waiting for me yesterday night European time.

Yes, I am in Norway too and the update appeared this morning, asked to make a new catalogue.

I agreed as I was not thinking something could go wrong. Do I simply need to update the masks or what?

Or is it solved when I load the previous catalogue?

The best way to solve it is to not immediately jump on every upgrade/update when it comes out.

Monitor this forum to see what issues users are having before you upgrade. In the apps page of the Adobe Creative Cloud App, in the Apps section. Top right, under the three dots, disable auto updates.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Yikes. Thank you for the warning and hopefully this isn't a bug that affects all users, because if it is that's going to be a massive nightmare for everyone.

Alright, I can confirm that this is indeed the case and Lightroom is now forcing a manual update of ALL IMAGES THAT HAVE A SELECT SUBJECT MASK.

This is an absolute disaster. Adobe, why do we need to manually update all of our masks one by one??? And how are we even supposed to tell which images have masks that need to be updated and which don't? I have hundreds of thousands of images in my Catalog and thousands of select subject masks, scattered amongst hundreds of folders. Are you expecting us to now go through our entire catalog and manually re-render everything before our next export?

Is this the intended UX here?

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post. Also large amounts of text in a post also render the Translate function inoperable...

P.S. I do not have this issue, I went and looked, nope, not a problem on my rig. (WINDOWS)

On second thought. Their are a few discussions on this (earlier). the .lrcat-data file may have issues, and replacing it may help (close LrC, delete the file in question, restart LrC)

see:

(about the 5th reply in that one, although for Windows)

Not sure on a MAC if you can look at and correct any file access rights to that file if it is not corrupt.

WARNING this will result in work. You will need to update ALL MASKS, and all Generative Removals will be gone.

Thank you for your feedback go70North, I have exactly the same problem and it's an absolute disaster... From one day to the next, because of an automatic Lightroom update that I didn't even need, I have to update the AI masks of over 8000 photos ONE BY ONE !!!! This is insane. Previously, I didn't even know about this AI mask update thing, I never heard of it nor had a red dot in my masks, no message telling me to update; today I've just discovered what it's all about. Of course, one can select 100 photos at a time: updating the AI masks then takes ten minutes... for NO RESULT !!!!!! The “update” function doesn't update anything : 10 minutes later, all 100 photos still have a red dot, nothing changes. The update notification will appear in the history of every photo on the left panel, but nothing changes ! Who are they kidding? And why hasn't there been an avalanche of testimonials since this catastrophic update on October 12? And on top of that, I have to pay every month for Adobe to ruin years of work???

For what it's worth, I reproduced it in 5mins...

Thank god I read this thread first, and exported a sample to a new catalog to try out.

FYI, there's a menu to do that in batch: Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings

It just took 4mins for 19 photos... that's going to be fun to apply to a whole catalog

As usual to find photos with Ai Masks use "Any Filter" Plug-in by @John R Ellis

.Regarding updating Ai DO NOT do it blindly and keep working after.

After Updating Ai check if actually the selections are good, becasue they might be worse than before

I have hundreds of Images on which I can't Update Ai Settings becasue it means getting worse results.
