P: Thick red/blue banding in brightened shadows of Denoised DNGs

I noticed this a few days ago but didn't realize the scale of the issue until I played around with the Exposure values and tested them to the limit.

I've attached two screenshots of the Develop module. The control image is an RAF photo with Exposure boosted to +5. The experiment is a DNG derived from the RAF, with a Denoise amount of 30. The effect manifests at all amounts from 1 to 100. However, the banding is not present in the Enhance Preview window. I have also attached the original Fujifilm RAF from my X-H2s camera (lossless compressed) and an affected DNG with Denoise.

I can't detect this phenomenon in NR conversions before LrC 13.3.

The significance should be self-evident. The banding artifacts appear in images with lifted shadows or underexposed photos with boosted brightness.

Greetings all,

A new update for Adobe Photography Products has been released.  The October (MAX) update contains an update for this issue.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Note: This particular issue is exacerbated by the Apple Neural Engine, which is now disabled in this update.

Thank you for being so patient

Hi, have used denoise AI regularly however, today, I used as normal and have noticed X2 purple bands appearing on the denoise DNG. These are not visible on the original files. I have attached screenshots of original RAF file and enhanced DNG

System used:

Macbook Pro 2022, M2 chip, Sonoma 14.5, Lightroom 7.4.1

Camera:

Fuji XH2, Sigma 18-50mm

I note that this seems to have been a problem previously but I cannot see that it has been resolved. Look forward to hearing from you soonest.

When trying to Denoise photos using the ai tool in Lightroom classic on my new Apple M3 Max MacBook Pro, I found that it processes the photo really fast compared to my older MacBook.. but leaves a checkerboard like color error on the processed image. I've never seen anything like it and tried to disable GPU in settings to see if anything changes and it made no difference. I take nightclub photos so being able to use the denoise tool is incredibly important to me. I thought maybe it was my camera or lens I used that night so I opened the catalog on my older MacBook (2018 2.9ghz 6 core intel i9 w/ Radeon pro Vega 20 4gb) and there was no checkerboard across the exact same photo when processing it. What could be causing this? My new laptop is under warranty, should I have it replaced?

The image wasn't attached. You need to use the icon on toolbar that looks like a mountain.

In the meantime, can you confirm whether the issue you're seeing is similar to that shown in below linked thread.  Given that your computer is Apple silicon rather than Intel with AMD GPU, it shouldn't be, but...

Upload a problem raw and the denoised .dng to Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar and post the sharing link here. We can see if the issue is inherent in the photo itself when denoised on other Apple Silicon devices or is specific to something on your computer.

Also, please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

Please upload the original raw as well (DSCF1729.RAF). That will let us test whether the denoise issue occurs on other Apple Silicon computers or is something specific to yours.

ok I added the raw file to that same folder, I used this image as an example as it required some heavy denoise from the program.. although every file from the last few shoots have the same issue and my old computer can denoise without any issues.

I see the same problem applying Denoise to your sample raw on my Apple M2 Max:

johnrellis_0-1724866890264.png

The photo was taken with a Fujifilm X-H2S, and Adobe has acknowledged a bug with Denoise and raws from that camera. I'm not aware of anyone posting a workaround, unfortunately.

That's awful... basically means my new computer isn't worth the upgrade and I should just continue using my old MacBook that was released before the M chips. I hope this bug is able to be resolved

Ok, I downloaded your sample, and imported it into my test catalog

BIG IMPORTANT NOTE: My rig Windows 11 PC and NVIDIA GPU. Not MACOS

I would like to point out that I made sure I was not applying any presets at import:

9.png

First thing I notice is that the image on my screen does not look at all like in your posting

10.png

You may notice that no edits appear in the Basic panel. And that the image is very underexposed. And not at all like your previous. This implies that you are making some edits in post processing prior to the Enhance. Perhaps a preset in import? Perhaps your /Preferences/Presets/Raw Defaults / ?? Or you did up the exposure some.

For a reference, below is my /preferences/presets/ during this test

18.png

For the Enhance, I just went with my current default

11.png

and the resultant image:

12.png

Bringing up a Reference view, two instances, first with the Enhanced selected as active, original as reference, then the other way around, this allows a simple way to compare the Histograms as well as the overall appearance

14.png

15.png

Now having looked at all that, a question may arise, what if I accomplish some tonality changes. Do the two files look the same. For this I used a plugin, Jeffrey Friedl's “Bag-o-Goodies” Plugin, specifically the Personalized Auto Tone, in where I limit Auto Tone to just Exposure, Whites and Blacks.

Again the Reference views

16.png

17.png

But of course the data is not the same, one RAF from camera, the other a DNG via Enhance.

the test is really really simple, you download the file i linked from DPR, as i said is an underexposed photo (it's used for latitude test/shadow recovery). i don't apply any setting or preset. you convert the RAF in DNG, you add later +5EV to check the shadow recovery ability. the RAF looks fine, the DNG is broken with red patches

i am not talking about colored noise, but about the large red rectangles apparent in the DNG

broken DNGbroken DNG

here you can see the comparison DNG vs original RAF (both at +5EV)

DNG VS RAFDNG VS RAF

I suspect a bug with the M1 GPU or maybe Sonoma

Ok, I see this has now been merged into another Bug posting. So at this point hope Adobe will fix. When? (not a clue)

Also I added as a note in my previous reply that my rig is Windows 11 NVIDIA GPU so not a MAC.

Hello everyone, I am having a strange issue with my photos that I have used denoise on. I am getting these lines across the screen, yet these are not in my raws and only the images that I have used denoise on.

I am editing on a Macbook pro M2 and shooting with a fuji x-h2 (this is my first shoot with this cam).

Is this a sensor issue or a lightroom bug? Is there a fix?

As you can see earlier in the thread, Adobe has acknowledged this bug with Denoise on Fujifilm X-H2. Unfortunately, they rarely indicate when/if a bug will be fixed, so you'll just have to wait.

I'd like to point out this isn't a bug exclusive to the X-H2 (I reported it initially after discovering on my X-H2s and confirming it on old photos taken with my X-T2). I've tested it on other Fujifilm raw files and the problem appears universal to every camera with X-Trans sensors. Given Adobe's indifference to good rendering of that colour filter array, I have low hopes of this issue being addressed with any priority, if at all.
