Question

1/100+- exported images exporting over or underexposed

I have had this isue for quite a while now. My lightroom is completely up to date and I check the images in library mode and develop mode before exporting. All my images turn out correctly exported apart from 2-3 random images per series of images. I am an events photographer, so usually 2-3 images per 200-300 images. When I re-export or adjust the settings on these images, they turn out exactly the same, underexposed or overexposed. Very frustrating!

I suggest posting one of the raw image files with the issue to Dropbox or other file sharing site. Save metadata to file (CTRL+S) and upload the XMP file with the raw file.

If you export again these over/underexposed images, do they are still over/underexposed?

If you export a group of images several times (without changing anything) is it always the same images that are over/underexposed?

In case it's always the same images, if you import again the RAW, does the problem still ocur at export?

Yes, if I re-export the same images are effected - in both methods.

Haven't tried to re-import the raw's, but that would cost me a large amount of time if I needed to export everything, go through the images to find the images with the issue, re-import and fix the files. I can try this but wouldn't not be a great solution. 🙂

I agree this not a great solution. But since this seems specific to some RAWs, my idea was to try narrowing the cause by reimporting one or 2 of these RAWs to see if you still get the defect.

If yes, this would mean that its caused by the way your camera created these RAW. This could help to determine the cause of problem by sending these defective RAWs to Adobe for analysis.

What do the offending ones look like in camera?  Make surre  that  no  automatic  correction in  camera is occuring. (possible viewing  issue  in manual export mode)

And  for that matter, how does  the  histogram look  in camera?

I am editing from RAW files - no differences in metadate or how the image is taken. I also cannot guess which ones will be over or underexposed from the files - it is completely random.

I shoot sony and histogram looks like every other image I take, perfectly exposed. This is why I am so confused! I feel there might be an exporting bug.

so if I understand you correctly, the images look fine in both Libary and Develop modules, but when you export a bunch at one time, one or two are overexposed when doing a group export?

Can you list your export settings?

Are these photos that are under/over being viewed inside of Lightroom or on some viewer program?

Where is the comparison/evaluation occuring

Hey David,

They look the same in develop mode and library mode - even when I restart lightroom they look how I wish them to look when exported. Only when I actually export them, 1/100 or so images is underexposed/overexposed randomly. Then when I go back into lightroom, I need to dramatically overexpose/underexpose to compensate slightly. My lightrooms are up to date, ect ect.

I have tried viewing the images in different programs, from re-importing them into lightroom, to previews, to airdropping them on my phone and looking at them in photomechanic, it really is a problem with the file.

So the comparison is between the exported image, and what I am seeing in my develop mode/library mode, which are mismatched

When you look at the exported photos in Develop mode, how do they look?

Remember, previews in Develop mode are not this used in Library mode.
