Adjustment brush tool issues

  • August 2, 2021

I have a late 2019 IMac

  • 27 inch Retina 5k monitor
  • 3 ghz core i5
  • 32 gb memory
  • standard radeon pro 4gb graphics

I'm running macOS 11.5.1, up-to-date with the version of Lightroom Classic.

Recently I've been having an issue with the adjustment brush. I can turn it on, adjust the size etc., but cannot use it on any files, whether they are from my Nikon Z7 or my old Nikon D750. When I try to move the brush over an open file the brush stops moving and the cursor vanishes: move the cursor over the panels and it is back.

(For what it's worth the same issue occurrs in Adobe Raw.)

Thoughts on things to try? places to look?

So, to clarify, or, actually to help should another member take a look at your post (words in red italics my assumption)

  1. You select an image
  2. You are in Develop Module
  3. You select the Adjustment Brush
  4. The Adjustment brush panel is expanded/shown
  5. The adjustment brush is ready for you to move your cursor over the image
  6. You move your mouse from the adjustment panel towards the image
  7. You see the adjustment brush. Two concentric circles surrounding a Plus symbol inside a circle
  8. Once the mouse gets to the edge of the image, the brush disappears.
  9. If you continue to move the mouse to the other side of the image, then just past the image, the brush reappears.
  10. Clicking on the image despite not seeing the brush accomplishes nothing.
  11. Misbehaves no matter if Show Adjustment Pins is Auto or Always
  12. Misbehave no matter if Show Mask is on or off
  13. Other Brushes behave.
  14. Preference file was reset. No improvement.

One issue with what I typed in above, items 10 and 12, not actually stated nor tested. Can you verify those two?

And, some system info

  • iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019)
  • LrC v10.3
  • MACOS v11.5.1
  • CPU Bus speed 3.0 GHz
  • RAM 32 GB
  • Display 1) 5120x2880
  • GPU AMD Radeon Pro 570X, with 4GB VRAM, it is using Metal

You might want to verify that the bad behavior does not change if the option to use graphics processor is on or off

Sorry for not responding earlier -- I had to be away from home for a day.

Now I'm really confused. I just opened LR Classic to check GoldingD's items 10 and 12: the adjustment brush now works (with the corresponding items in Adobe Raw and Photoshop working as well).

I have made 0 (zero) changes to settings since my previous post. The only thing that has occurred: we had a brief power outage during a storm and the computer, obviously, shut down. Now that it's started LR performance is back. Perhaps some odd cache issue?

In any case: I've bookmarked this set of messages in case odd behavior sets in once again. Many thanks to GoldingD for taking the time to think about this and make suggestions: your comments are much appreciated.

When you teset the preference file, you did restart the computer, correct?

Have you considered resetting the preference file, a.k.a restoring the preference file.

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

The preference file can get corrupted leading to buggy behavoir. The preference file survives upgrades, uninstalls/reinstalls.

Tried this -- no difference in behavior resulted.

Please post a screenshot, develop module, of that brush panel in use.

Here is one -- not very exciting.

Thanks again for showing interest.

And what adjustments do you want to accomplish? You have not moved any of the sliders  (effect) off zero.

Ok, I see I needed to read your post twice, reply once. My request for screenshot tells me I asked the wrong question.

up-to-date with the version of Lightroom Classic.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.
