OK, try again but this time also delete the Lightroom Catalog Helper.lrdata. This is very strange. There is no previews cache, so I don't understand how Lightroom can report an error reading from it...

Also try deleting the preferences. That sometimes solves odd errors too:

Is that the only one? That is a very old backup.

Go back to the situation where you had 'Lightroom catalog-2.lrcat' and a bunch of other files. Delete the 'Lightroom Catalog-2.lrcat -wal' file and the 'Lightroom Catalog-2.lrcat.lock' file. Then start Lightroom by double clicking the 'Lightroom Catalog-2.lrcat' file. Does that work?

What you are seeing is your Lightroom > Backups folder contents.

Ok just for clarification, see the screen capture. The Lightroom cache file being referred to, which has to be deleted,  has the same name as your Catalog file that you are currently using, with the ending Extention (.Previews.lrdata) and is located in the same folder as the catalog.

So if I were doing this I would delete the highlighted file as shown in the screen capture..

In fact, if you delete all the files except the backup folder, then you also delete the catalog. If Lightroom does not complain about that (not tell you it cannot find the catalog), then that suggests it is using another catalog stored somewhere else.
