Question

Adobe made my 100.000+ GPS data vanish!

Adobe no longer supports Lightroom 4. It wants its customers to subscribe to Lightroom CC etc. I want to stick with the stand alone version of Lightroom 4 (I am not willing to subscribe to  software fig I am forced to by a change of business policy.

But now Adobe made without any warning, my GPS data vanish. The effect of no longer supporting Lightroom 4 is that they skipped the whole map, including my 100.000+ photo GPS data.

Where are my GPS data? Can Adobe them get them back to me? Or is the loss of GPS data the price I have to pay for not subscribing ...?

Anyone out there that can help me in this question? Thanks and good luck.

Google changed how they price their mapping services, requiring old applications like LR 4 to be updated (and presumably more money from Adobe).  Like most companies, Adobe doesn't provide support for old versions of applications, so because they didn't provide an update to LR 4's Map module (and presumably, provide more money to Google), the LR Map Module no longer works.  See this Help article: Map is no longer supported in this version of Lightroom

However, the GPS coordinates stored for each photo should still be present in your catalog.  You can verify this by going to Library, selecting a photo, and looking at the Metadata > Location panel in the right column:

Thanks for the replies! As English is not at all my first language: sorry for the mistakes in make.

My problem is that in my version of Lightroom 4 the GPS-data in the metadata column are gone entirely! Not only the map is gone - that is something I can understand from a business pont of view. But the GPS data vanished also. Andd that is another question.

I can understand that Adobe prefers subscriptions over selling. But I have not even got the choice: it is subscribe or get lost. And if they would have warned me beforehand that data could get lost I would have been able to try to solve that problem. Now I am faced with a situation that makes it even kore difficult top decide wether I will subscribe to Lightroom CC or not. No one can guarantee that the lost GPS data will come back in a newer Lightroom version. Or will they and can my GPS data be restored after an update?

Hmm, you're the first person to report this here. The GPS locations should not have disappeared from your catalog -- LR does not normally delete GPS data after the Map module gets disabled.

Some troubleshooting questions:

1. Approximately when did you last remember seeing the GPS metadata in the catalog?

2. Do you have catalog backups?

Your GPS data is not lost. It should be exactly where it was before, in the Metadata of the images.

What has happened is Google, which is where LR gets the Map data from, has changed how their Map system is accessed. stopping all previous versions of LR from displaying the map info in the LR Map Module.

Since LR 4 is many years old Adobe will not update it. This is completely normal for all older pieces of software and software companies.

Thats really unfortunate that this has happened for you . . .

However, I'm losing a little in translation or grammar in your post so with respect could you provide some more details?

You say Adobe (quote) "skipped the whole map" (unquote) but I am not sure what you are referring to.

Did you lose it from your metadata?
