AI masking not working, already updated graphic drivers

I've helped dozens of users with this issue on these forums.  Almost all of the reports of  the error message "Something went wrong" fall into two categories:

1. Updating the driver to the latest from the manufacturer solves the problem (the large majority of the cases).

2. The user's graphics hardware is older (e.g. 7 years old) and the manufacturer has stopped providing updated drivers (e.g. Intel).

It would be much better if AI masking obeyed the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor, allowing the user to disable the GPU for AI masking just as she can do for LR's other use of the GPU.  But a senior Adobe engineer mistakenly posted a year ago that the Windows and Mac operating systems wouldn't allow that,  and consequently Adobe has ignored the suggestion.
