Auto Button for Tone Control (Quick Develop Panel) no longer adjusting both photos in Compare View

While in Compare View in the Library Module I will often adjust the Auto Tone in the photos I am comparing via the Quick Develop Panel. I used to be able to adjust both photos at the same time, but all of sudden I have to adjust them seperately by making each one the active photo and then click on the Auto button for Tone Control.  Same thing occurs when trying to Reset.  This does not occur when both photos are selected in the Grid view. In this instance both photos are adjusted at the same time when the Auto Button for Tone Control is selected. Not sure if this is a result of latest 8.4.1 update or if I accidentally changed a setting? Anyone else experience this or know of a solution? Thanks.

EDIT: I just tested this on my Windows 7 system with LR 5.7.1 and riawaugh is correct! Both the Select and Candidate image files have Auto Tone applied and it's unique to each image file. (See post below) Only the Select image file has Auto Tone applied. Of course it's possible an older or newer version (except 8.4) may have exhibited this behavior or it could have been due to corruption of the LR Preferences file. This has been known to cause unexplained behavior.

I wonder when that was changed. Lr8.4.1 behaves the way you describe if you turn Auto-Sync on in Library. I think the 8.4.1 behavior should be considered the correct behavior because you may not always want to change all the selected photos during compare/survey and the use of Auto-Sync allows you to enable/disable this behavior.

My bad! You're right Bob–I had 'Auto Sync' selected in the LR 5.7.1 Library module! With the switch set to 'Sync' only the most selected image file has Auto Tone applied! Thtat may in fact be what the OP was doing, but forgot that was the case.

You can do this by right-clicking on the unselectable image and using Develop Settings> Auto Settings. Both images will have Auto Tone applied. Not sure that's any faster than what you're doing now, but it works.

Thanks, but yes it's an extra step.

I agree with David.  Only the most selected photo in Compare or Survey should be editable.  I think this is the way it always has been.

Nope, not the way it's always been. I have been able to do Quick develop edits to both images in Compare view for years.

Edits have always worked only on the most selected photo in Compare View, Loupe View and Survey View unless you turn Auto-Sync ON.

BTW Reference View does the same thing without having to use the secondary display window.

This Adobe document clearly states to accomplish this in grid view:

I'm aware how this works grid view. My issue is in compare view. It worked for years and all of a sudden doesn't.

the I would have thought that your previous experience would in fact have been a bug, that in compare, only one image should have been editable. Point is to compare one to another, not to tweak both.

Well if it was a bug it was a very effective one and certainly a time saver in my culling process as it was nice to add a quick change while comparing, for example 2 darker images.
