When I use the "Y" to see before and after, it shows the same photo.  Either two before or two after. Please help.  I'm new..

Can you show the history panel on this image? Usually when the before and after images look the same it means that there have been no changes to the image since import or that you changed the before setting to a new state using the buttons at the bottom or the options in the settings menu. Note also that if you do an edit in Photoshop, you create a new image where the before state is the state after editing in Photoshop as now all the older Lightroom settings you applied to the orginal raw are now baked into the image and can no longer be changed.

Do you mean it says before (or after) in both windows? It should say before at the left and after on the right as in this screenshot. The before state is usually the "import" history state but if you click the options at the bottom you can switch the before and after states.

elsas......

Post a screen-clip of your Develop History Panel.

I would like to see the Develop edits you have made to the image.

I just noted a PSD! If you are viewing a PSD file that has just come back from Photoshop, then this image is 'New' (just created or edited by Ps)  so unless you do further developing in Lightroom there is nothing to see that is different with the [Y/Y]. [Y/Y] only looks at the current viewed image file, it does NOT compare your original RAW with the new PSD.  This would be the function of "Reference View" where you could view the RAW and PSD side-by-side.

The "Y" BEFORE/AFTER shortcut always shows the same photo. (The one 'most selected' on the filmstrip)

By default the window shows the 'Before' view as it was at the time of Import, and the 'After' view as it appears with the current Develop editing.

You can change the default 'Before' view by [Right-Click] on any step in the History Panel and choose- [Copy History Step Settings to Before].

If you want to 'Compare' two different photos-

In Develop module there is [R/A] to show a Reference Photo.

In the Library Grid there is [X/Y] for Compare view.

In the Develop Module, pressing in Y enters the Compare mode, it shows the current photo in two cells, one being at current history (edits) state, the other before all the editing.
