Best iPhone GPS / GPX Log App

There are a lot of GPS tracking apps for the iPhone, and I'd like to get input on which one(s) to use from people who have used them to geotag in Lightroom 4.

I've read reviews on some that output a GPX log that they don't include time stamps. Others track, but aren't clear if they output a GPX log. Also, I'd like to know for the ones that do output a GPX log, what method do you use to get it on the computer?

Lastly, for those using Android, is My Tracks a viable solution?

I'll second the recommendation for MotionX-GPS. You might find this Jeffrey Friedl blog post quite interesting, comparing the iPhone GPS (and MotionX-GPS app) with a couple of dedicated Garmin trackers:

In terms of getting the .gpx tracklog from phone to computer, there are several ways (obviously iTunes sync included) but I found the easiest was to simply email it to myself then pick up the attachment when back at the PC.

For geotagging in Lightroom 4 using an iPhone, many users recommend GPS tracking apps like Gaia GPS or MotionX-GPS, as they reliably export GPX files with timestamps. These GPX files can be transferred to your computer via email, cloud services like Dropbox, or direct USB transfer. Apps that lack clear timestamp support are less useful for syncing with Lightroom.

IPhone users should have a look at Tracked. It’s an easy-to-use gps tracker with gpx export (via mail, Dropbox or other cloud services with apps) and works just fine with Lightroom.

It is designed to be fast, minimal, and with export for photo geotagging.

If I could suggest an alternative here and fly a flag, take a look at the GTrek (http://www.gtrek.co.uk). It would do exactly as you require and your phone battery won't take a hit either. The provided software also has GeoTagger functions built in.

I use MapMyWalk but it does not, repeat does not include time stamps in its GPX dumps. So have just tried Motion-X GPS (69 pence) on my iPhone4, as S4ENO suggested. It is impressive and does include time stamps.

I may be a bit late, but here is an app that I wrote that does what you want:

It creates a gpx file with timestamps, and can be accessed via iTunes:

- open iTunes

- choose your device

- select the "Apps" tab

- under "File Sharing" locate MyTrax

- you can then access all of the exported gpx file and save them to your computer (and delete them from your device if you want)

I've used Geotab Photos Pro a couple of times. It works OK. There is a lite version that is free to try.

It seems to be pretty complete, but as I said I haven't tested it extensively because I have two other GPS Dataloggers and so far haven't forgotten to take at least one of them whenever I leave the house with a camera.
