Black screen in Develop Module

First time poster and very frustrated. I had been using LR without issue for years. Last fall I started to notice that the screen would go black in development module and the panels would not come back (visible) without restarting LR. I turned off graphic usage in performance. Black screens kept happening.

Then things got better. I have LR 12.3 installed. I upgraded my RAM from 16GB to 64 to give myself more room to work and multitask (overkill I know but I have been above 32GB usage). Things were still going smoothly for a while and then I started to get crashes (not black screen). I updated all drivers, flashed the latest bios for my MB, ran every hardware scan I could find, ran CC cleaner. I thought maybe something was corrupting my catalog so I made a new one and copied in the old one. Still crashes. So I created a brand new catalog and imported directly from my HD (not really what I wanted to do, but if it works...) still crashes every time.

I have done everything I can think of, but the system seem to get bogged down by scrolling through the gird, freezes and then crashes. EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So I think my issues are resolved! I noticed in the Event Viewer that I was seeing something going on with the MSI OC software. I had updated the full suite of software from MSI after I flashed the bios. I removed all MSI software I could find and turned off gaming boost OC in bios and everything seems to be working as expected. I have been scrolling through the grid trying to get it to crash and so far (knock on wood) no crashes. Thanks GoldingD and dj_paige for your help.

I should mention that I have already uninstalled LR Classic and PS, rebooted and reinstalled... did nothing 😞

 I updated all drivers

ran CC cleaner

<gpu>
<gpuinfo availability="Running/Full Power" adapterCompatibility="Advanced Micro Devices, Inc." adapterRAM="4095 MB" caption="AMD Radeon (TM) R9 380 Series" description="AMD Radeon (TM) R9 380 Series" driverDate="20220802000000.000000-000" driverVersion="27.20.20913.2000" videoModeDescription="1920 x 1080 x 4294967296 colors" pnpDeviceID="PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6939&SUBSYS_20151462&REV_F1\4&1C3D25BB&0&0019" installedDisplayDrivers="amdxc64.dll,aticfx64.dll"/>

So a few questions.

 • All drivers included the GPU? Yes I know, first driver to check for Adobe issues, and "All" implies yes, the GPU, got to ask.
 • Is that CCleaner Pro, can you check device drivers with it? Did your All drivers include the chipset? Yes I know, if you went as far to flash the BIOS, then the MB drivers would be addressed, got to ask.
 • driverVersion="27.20.20913.2000", Per: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-22-6-1-legacy it looks like AMD 27.20.20912.1002 is the latest, but it was released 6/23/2022, AMD has this GPU in legacy status, appears to be no further support.

I turned off graphic usage in performance. Black screens kept happening.

Ah, Ok, I will not ask If you turn off the use GPU option, does LrC behave? You did, it did not.

Hmm, head scratching, zip_source_win32handle_create, what has that to do with your LrC crashing?

You might want to google on "access violation zip_source_win32handle_create". Not a pro, but searching the web appears to indicate the access violation shown relates to Visual C++, and another search shows that LrC can have issues with a corrupt Visual C++

GoldingD, thanks for taking the time to respond. Hopefully I am formatting my response in a reasonable way...

 • All drivers included the GPU? Yes I know, first driver to check for Adobe issues, and "All" implies yes, the GPU, got to ask.

Yes. first thing I did was update GPU drivers to latest and then rechecked just 2 days ago to make sure I actually did it.

 • Is that CCleaner Pro, can you check device drivers with it? Did your All drivers include the chipset? Yes I know, if you went as far to flash the BIOS, then the MB drivers would be addressed, got to ask.

No, free version of CCleaner. Yes, you can see what drivers it says are out of date but it won't update them for you. The only ones it lists to still update are Gigabit Network Connection, Optiarc DVD RW, AMD Crash Defender, PCI Express Root Complex, Epson Printer Utility. I will try to update the AMD Crash Defender and PCI Express, but I am not sure if that has anything to do with LR.

I did update the chipset drivers and anything else driver wise related to the MB after I flashed the latest bios.

Does this matter if I turn off GPU in performance settings? I read a little about the AMD GPU issues, but hadn't had problems for a long time so I figured I was fine.

I will look through the steps in the link you sent regarding Visual C++ and report back with the results.

I used to get black screens. The problem for me was that the coolant in my computer case cooling system was leaking. I would check the ENTIRE cooling system to be confirm that is (or is not) the problem.

dj_paige,
Was this impacting other programs as well? So far the only thing that I have problems with is running LR. I'm not actually getting the black outs anymore... maybe I'm not using LR long enough for it to get hot. I will see if I can do some temp monitoring to see how hot everything is getting.

I think the question may not be relevant. LrC tends to produce more heat (under some situations) than most other programs. So, you should definitely check your cooling system.

LATEST

So I think my issues are resolved! I noticed in the Event Viewer that I was seeing something going on with the MSI OC software. I had updated the full suite of software from MSI after I flashed the bios. I removed all MSI software I could find and turned off gaming boost OC in bios and everything seems to be working as expected. I have been scrolling through the grid trying to get it to crash and so far (knock on wood) no crashes. Thanks GoldingD and dj_paige for your help.
