Blurry photos in Instagram

New Here ,
Mar 18, 2025 Mar 18, 2025

Hello Everyone. I've been a lightroom user for at least 5 years. Way back I had export settings saved in my lightroom but recently I had to delete lightroom off my desktop and redownload it. None of the export settings saved unfortunately. Now, when I export photos, and try to upload to instagram, they are extremely blurry. I've used settings people have recomended on youtube but nothing has worked. The ONLY time my photos aren't blurry and look normal on instagram is if I upload more than one photo. If I upload a single photo, it's extremley blurry. I'm beyond confused. Thanks!

Hey! @cameronp84108591,

Can you share what version of Lightroom you're using right now? You can find this information by going to Help > System Info while in Lightroom.

The version is 14.1.1 Camera Raw 17.1

My current export settings are: SRGB, Resize to fit: Long Edge 1080pixels, Don't Enlarge, Resolution 72ppi. I've tried different sharpening settings but it hasn't changed how it looks. I've tried many different settings and the ones listed in this message have gotten me closest to a sharp photo but it's still pretty bad.

Please try some simple debugging. When you export the photo in the case where Instagram is blurry ... does the photo look blurry before you upload it to Instagram but after you export it from LrC? Also, what are the pixel dimensions (width and height) of this exported photo?

The photo is only blurry after upload to IG. When I export from Lightroom its normal and even when i transfer it to my phone. As mentioned above, 1080p is the max for my photos.

I'm looking at the exported photo right now and the dimensions say 1080x720

You need to ensure that 'Highest Quality Uploads' is enabled. Below is copied from a Google search using the title of this thread.

  • Go to your Instagram profile and tap the three horizontal lines (menu) in the top-right corner.

  • Select "Settings" and then "Account" > "Data Usage".

  • Make sure that "High-Quality Uploads" is toggled on.

  • Ensure "Use Less Mobile Data" is turned off, as this can reduce image quality.

@Ian Lyons unfortunately I tried that already and that didn't change anything.

The size of the 5x4 ratio for instagram is 1350X1080 (vertical) so personally I'd be looking at larger uploads so the short edge is 1080 not the long edge.

Hey @cameronp84108591

It looks like @Ian Lyons and @dj_paige have gone through most of the troubleshooting. The only thing I can think of is maybe setting the Quality to 80-85 (High, but not maximum to avoid unnecessary compression).

Thank you everyone for helping!
