BUG: Lightroom CC 9.1 corrupts Sandisk memory Cards when "Eject after Import" is used.

Clearly a bug.  LR CC 9.1 is corrupting the Memory Cards when "Eject After Import" is used.  The card is truly corrupted - the card images are corrupted and not recognized by iMac Finder.  I have tried this many times, and actually thought it was the CAMERA that was at fault, and have sent it back to the manufacturer.  Now I tried on another camera, and it is doing the same thing.  This is getting expensive (up to 8 cards destroyed before I figured it out AND camera mailed for $100 to Olympus!!!). 

 Situation:

 - iMac Mojave 10.14.6 with Memory Card Slot  

  - FAILURE: LR CC Import from any memory card is corrupted when "Eject after Import" is used.  EVERY.SINGLE.TIME!

  - SUCCESS: Inserted Memory card; copied images from Mem card using iMac Finder to an iMac folder. 

       - Import from iMac folder (NOT from memory card) - Correct import; no corruption of Memory Card or imported files.  

How do you fix this?  

How do you communicate it so it doesn't happen to others?

Same thing happens on my iMac, when import is done Lightroom says it's ejected my SD card. When I pull SD card from slot I get the "disk ejected improperly" message. Second time I looked for SD, but it does not show up as a mounted (or unmounted) disk, so I have no way of ejecting it. I've unticked the eject when done importing checkbox. I'm able to reformat the card in camera, Doesn't matter what camera (several Pentax, and a Canon).

Ahh, when Lightroom fails, then you cannot eject the card.

 

Now that is a very different bag of worms.

 

So in reality you need to resolve why Lightroom Classic fails, after trip.

 

Just in case, did not see the plugin info in your abbreviated SYS Info.. Do you have the plugin LogiOptions? Big pain in the rear end, deactivate that one if you have it, causes all sorts of issues, some just annoying, some crashing.

 

When you have the oprotunity, DId not state full method of getting sys info, made an assumption, So, anyhow. In Lightroom Classic click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that into a reply. Not intereseted in info after the plugin info, bunch of giberish.

Hi all - not that I normally post but was looking for a solution to exactly the same one reported on this thread. Formating my SD card (SanDisk) in camera, taking shots, ejecting the card and placing in either an external card reader OR internal card reader I would be able to transfer images ONCE sucessfully. Lightroom was set to "eject" the card after importing. The card was then effectively 'corrupt' for subsequent imports. It would still function as normal in camera, but could no longer be read by any card reader I tried on my PC. The error was basically 'the card needs to be formated before use'.

 

Having spent some time with Hasselblad support this afternoon we eventually proved that it was not the camera, nor the OS that was causing the issue - Lightroom's eject process appears to be the culprit. Turn off auto eject and the card remains readable next time you import photos.

 

I am a PC user btw - Windows 10 Pro / Ver 1909 / Build 1836.657 - I only use SanDisk cards so cant comment on other types but the behaviuor is replicatable on a variety of hardware inc. Dell, MS Surface and ASUS PCs running Win 10 and Lightroom.  Interestingly the issue would never arise if importing to an iOS device irrepstective of sceanrio above.

 

Just thought it might be useful to update this thread as a windows and not a MAC user

General inquiry to all members

 

Hiw does one inspect an internal card reader for defects? Will taking the iMAC to an Apple Store (techs) be advisable.?

The only way to do that is to connect an external card reader. Do copies, Moves and use programs like LR that access the card to get files from it. If you have no errors then the internal reader Physical connector tabs or soldered joints or board traces are faulty.

 

In all modern Mac's that have built in memroy card readers they are soldered directly to the motherboard, what Apple calls the Logic Board. Apple will not replace just the physcal card reader (they Don't Fix your problem) they Replace the complete Logic board at a cost of many hundreds, if not over a thousand, dollars. They then, possibly, Refurbish (Repare/Replace) that one part then turn around and sell that same logic board for that hundreds +++ dollars to some other faithful Mac User.

The corrupt SD cards, can they be formatted in camera? Is this just corrupted in MAC?

 

As they appear to be SanDisk, download SanDisk recovery tool to fix/repair.

This makes absolutely zero sense. Ejecting a memory card/external drive/whatever else is an operating system function.

 

The application is just sending a request to the OS. It doesn't actually do it.

 

And like everybody else, this is the first time I hear about this.

    I agree David.  I can't remember any threads about destroyed cards or card corruption  and haven't found any through search.  I would like to see links too. The OP says the cards were "destroyed". Does that mean physically damaged?

    Please post your system information as Lightroom Classic reports it. I assume you know how. As you probably know info from first line down to just past plug-in info, and as you probably know info after plug-in info of no interest to all but high end techs.

     

    I do not expect anything to scream out this is it, but you never know. And, this is always bound to be asked.

    I am about to leave on a trip (funeral, pretty important) so can't do more
    tests . I ordered 6 16 GB Sandisks so I can do additional testing when I
    return. Really tired of messing up expensive 64GB memory cards. I admit
    that I did think it was the camera at first, and sent in the camera! Now
    it fails with all 3 cameras (Nikon, 2 Olympus). Does seem odd that it
    would be LR not iMac card reader, so have to find my cable to try that too.
    Tests done/ to be done:
    - Eject after import: Fails 90% of time. Yes, I format each card each
    time.
    - Eject by Finder: only 1 test so far; worked. (needs more trials)
    - Import with memory cable: tbd
    - take photo of screen display showing corrupted images: attached
    What I do see is that the import fails after a few successes; some
    images are imported, one gets corrupted part way, the rest then show as
    gray with LR ! Flag indicating that image couldn't be found.

     

    Really important point that I forgot earlier:

     - when the LR Import fails, LR will NOT allow iMac to eject the card.  Shutting down LR doesn't work, and Quit/Force Quit to iMac Finder doesn't work, so the only way to get the card out is to pull it out and get an iMac warning of Card not ejected properly.  So, this may indeed be iMac corrupting the memory card.  But the question to Adobe LR is why doesn't LR disengage its hold on the card which forces the user (me) to take this drastic and apparently damaging action?

      - The cards seem to be permanently corrupted - reformatting them doesn't work.  Learned that the hard way and lost some vacation photos.

    You should probably include your system information as Lightroom Classic reports it.  (I will ask the same next reply)

     

    And, I would reccomend  you include a screenshot of your import display, including the eject after import clearly shown (eliminated a question)

    Is the SD card reader internal or external.

     

    If external, do you have another, is something wrong with the SD card reader/cable?

    The SD Card reader is internal to the iMac. (My photography instructor
    told us never to use a remote cable due to potential for loss of data).

      Sorry but your Photo instructor is givng you the wrong information.

       

      I have always used card readersthat I connect ot my computers with a cable of one type or another. I would think 99% of all people that take digital photos use a cable from either a camera or card reader. In fact the Built in card reader in your Mac is connected by a bunch of wires of one kind or another to the rest of the computer.

       

      Do cables fail? Sure they do. Can a built in card reader go bad? Most certainly.
