Built-In lens profile disappearing?

Hey there!

I got myself the Nikon Z6 with the 24-70mm f4S and 50mm f1.8S lenses. After fiddling with the raws I learned about the built-in profiles.

At first Lightroom CC 8.2.1 (Camera Raw 11.2.1) said that it couldn't find any profiles and after a reset it actually did find and apply them.

The sentence "Built-in lens profile applied" appeared - but then disappeared. There's just no sentence with an "i" button there anymore.

I convert my NEFs to DNG. Might this be the problem?

What does this mean? Is this normal?

    Then I did reset my preferences and it showed up! But only for a short time.

    Is this issue still occurring?  Two others have reported that resetting preferences eliminated the problem:

    (LR clearly has a badly designed architecture for preferences -- too many users "solve" problems by resetting them.)

    I downloaded from dpreview.com this sample Z6 .nef taken with the Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm F4 S: Nikon Z6 sample gallery: Digital Photography Review . My LR 8.2.1 shows Built-in Lens Profile Applied for both the .nef and .dng:

    If you upload one of the problem .nefs and corresponding .dng to Dropox or similar and post the sharing link here, we can see if the issue is with the file or your configuration.

      First of all, thanks to both of you for replying!

      I have vignette and distortion correction turned on in-camera. This means, that those settings carry over to Lightroom with the .nef and the corresponding .dng? Or rather should be? I was able to see the " Built-in Lens Profile applied." message but then it disappeared.

      This is how my Lens Corrections tab looks like with a fresh file,converted when importing it:

      "Remove Chromatic Aberration" was checked automatically though.

      I imported a .nef and the " Built-in Lens Profile applied." message appeared! Then I converted it to .dng per "Library - Convert Photo to DNG" and the message is still showing. When clicking on the the following message appeares: "

      ... as it should. But why did it show up with the other .dngs and now it does it only with this fresh file? Does the message disappear after a while? It's still there after restarting Lightroom.

      Idea: I had Lightroom 8.1 installed when I imported the now not-showing .dngs. I then uninstalled Lightroom, but kept my preferences. After installing I used the "old" catalogue and it still didn't work. Then I did reset my preferences and it showed up! But only for a short time. This fresh nef/dng is imported and converted with LR8.2.1 / Camera Raw 11.2.1).

      Could this be it? It might be super trivial and now that I think of it, it might be the reason.

      Turning on vignette and distortion correction in the camera will have no material effect when shooting Raw, apart from perhaps slightly slowing down the camera's operation (since the camera is then applying these corrections during its own internal Raw conversion, while generating JPG data). It may be that the camera manufacturer supplied Raw converter would behave differently depending on these, and other, in-camera settings but Lightroom will disregard these and follow its own methods only.

      I suggest that if "Enable Profile Corrections" is greyed out and disabled in LR, you can safely assume that embedded lens data - which is not the same thing as a profile - is being applied.

      That explanatory message has not been shown by all versions of LR.. not sure why it would be seen with only some images from a given camera. Using the same Process Version? Not expected in the case of camera JPG, or an external edited TIFF/PSD, or a 'merged' DNG - but AFAICT there should be no difference in this respect between a native proprietary Raw, and a converted DNG, imported direct from a given camera model.

      More and more Adobe in conjunction with the camera company’s is using built-in corrections. These are lens corrections the camera makes to the image it stores onto the memory card. Now making those corrections in camera is optional in your cameras settings (probably defaults to corrected). Typically it only occurs with native glass, will not occur if legacy or third party glass is used.

      In Lightroom, in this situation, no lens profiles exist (for the modern glass) and no autocorrections other than chromatic are available. (think I am forgetting one thing)

      This is the new norm for mirrorless.

      Oh, and this does apply to RAW as well as JPEG.
