Camera Profiles lost in the latest upgrade

  • April 7, 2018

Updated to Lightroom Classic 7.3 early in the week.    Since the upgrade/update, Lightroom is now telling me that my camera profiles are missing.  I have a colour profile for each of my cameras in different lighting conditions - daylight, overcast, studio & flash.  I'm assuming that the update hasn't actually deleted them but that it has failed to carry their location forward as part of the update.  anyone have a solution?

Operating System MAC.  OS: High Sierra 10.13.4, 16gb RAM 3GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB Fusin Drive, although all images stored on a LaCie 6TB NAS Raid 1 format

    VSCO MISSING PROFILE FIX!

first a little background - i've been running my LR on two computers via an external hardrive for years. In my LR catalogue I use the "store presets with catalogue" option. This way all my presets SHOULD be accessible no matter what LR I use or what computer I use .

A little over a year ago I had one and only one of my adjusted VSCO presets (my most used black and white preset) stop working on my desktop computer. When I'd use it it would be flat and dull - when I opened the LR catalogue on my laptop and would use the same preset it would be fine! After updating both my LR's it said that the profile was missing on my desktop computer but not on my laptop. Which I had no idea what that really meant and am still not 100% sure since I'm not a computer wiz.

After spending hours of very frustrating research with zero success I finally got everything working today. Without knowing much about why this all worked all I can do is tell you what I finally did to fix it all which is an amalgamation of a bajillion fixes I came across through my research today -

    1) Make sure your computer systems are matching - I'm running High Sierra V 10.13.5

    2) Make sure your LR Classic CC's are both up to date and matching*

    3) Make sure your Photoshop CC versions are both up to date and matching* this was key for me!

    4) Redownload your VSCO presets

    5) Make sure you do have Mac: Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / CameraRaw / CameraProfiles / [your VSCO Preset Pack Folder should be here along with any other downloaded 3rd party preset]

** I didn't have the Library folder in my username I did have a Library folder with similar if not almost matching folder structures directly in the Mac HD folder so I thought that was the correct one originally (if you don't see the Library folder it is most likely hidden follow the suggestions on this page to find it! Access hidden Mac OS library files

    6) If all of this is aligned, reopen LR - when I did mine prompted me saying that some user permissions weren't being granted? (never saw it before) but I clicked on the learn more link and it sent me to this useful page which I followed the instructions for ( I had to do this on both my desktop AND laptop)

link --> Solutions to Adobe Lightroom Lightroom user permission issues on launch

Once I did all of this I relaunched my LR on my laptop, everything seemed to be working fine, so I made a new test preset and saved it. Then I launched LR on my desktop via the external harddrive and voila all my preset profiles were there (nothing missing) and the preset I had just made on my laptop was there too! Everything seems to be fine! I went and made sure that I could access Mac: Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / CameraRaw / CameraProfiles /

and sure enough all my preset packs had their own folders with their corresponding .dcp files (which I couldn't find anywhere before)

I'm not sure if when I updated the Photoshop or updated the High Sierra to the latest version it created this new Camera Raw folder structure (my desktop was running 10.13.4 and my laptop was on 10.13.5 at the time of the issue) - but either way it's all set now and I really really hope this works for ya'll!

    Best!

I think I found the solution by accident. At least for Camera Raw. Just right click where once where the presets, then choose show partially compatible etc

    the presets will appear

After talking someone through the same issue with VSCO profiles (it says Missing Profile now when selecting a VSCO preset), this other user described how they had been able to use Canon profiles with their Leica VSCO presets, and saved that modification.  I don't know if they were using Canon profiles because the Leica profiles weren't available from VSCO at first or ever, but that mixing of camera model and profile doesn't work anymore with VSCO-based presets and profiles as of LR 7.3/ACR 10.3 and the new profile browser and XMP preset files.

I wouldn't have guessed it would have ever worked, but clearly as the other user was doing, using a Canon profile with a Leica camera via a preset wasn't officially supported, and is now not working.

From looking on VSCO's website it appears that each of their Film profiles is created for each of the cameras they support so if these are original VSCO presets that are giving you the Missing Profile message then you probably just need to update to the latest version of the Film preset from VSCO and get support for your new camera, but if you have modified the original VSCO preset to use a camera profile for a camera that you're not applying the preset to, then it won't work, anymore, and you may need to create new presets that point to the camera-model-appropriate profile for your various cameras if you've been using the same camera profile across multiple camera models.

Since I don't have VSCO profiles I can't carefully verify what profiles are being used by what preset for what camera, only you can do that, so I can't verify if there is actually something VSCO needs to work on, or just that you'll need to adjust the profile name in each preset to use the model for each camera you adjust images for.

If it turns out you have mixed-camera-vs-profile presets then you might be able to use a text editor to do an en-masse change to a group of profiles to swap the profile name to the one that matches the camera the preset is being applied to.

ssprengel Here's what my preset is. Also, there isn't a profile for the ektar 100-n but it was never a problem before.

So VSCO supplies film-simulation presets that are a combination of LR settings and a particular camera profile.  The filename and path shown in your screenshot is the old pre-LR 7.3 version of the preset file ending with .lrtemplate and the two initial tilde characters indicate that it has been converted to the new .XMP format when you installed LR 7.3.  It's possible it hasn't and you can try renaming it by removing the two leading tilde characters and restart LR, but since you can select a preset from the list, it's probably ok at least as far as the preset file existing in XMP format.

What I think is happening is that, contrary to what you believe, there *is* a camera profile being referred to in the preset, apparently with the name of Kodak Ektar 100-N (as shown in your first screenshot of the Profile area in LR), and that VSCO-supplied camera profile cannot be found, either because it's been renamed or moved as part of the latest LR updates.  Unfortunately, I don't have VSCO Film presets to confirm where the profile should be.  You may be able to open the preset file with a text editor and see what camera profile file is being referred to, something with a .dcp extension, or just look on your hard drive for .dcp extension files and some probably have VSCO or Ektar in their names.  The pretty name in LR is contained within the profile file so the filename might be longer or somewhat different, whatever VSCO wanted to name it.

If you can determine what the camera profile is that's being referred to in the VSCO preset file, and figure out what the profile has been renamed to (or where it is located if it is somewhere else) and rename it so it can be seen by LR.

The third-party camera profiles, like those that accompany VSCO presets, are in a different location on a Mac than the Adobe-supplied profiles, and where LR on a Mac should be looking for those is:

Go to Finder> Click on Go> Click on Go to folder> Type  ~Library and click on Go.

Then go to the following location ApplicationSupport/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfile and look for .dcp files with VSCO in their name, or if you find some elsewhere, put then here so LR can see them.  Be sure you are looking in the ApplicationSupport under your username (where the ~Library puts you) not the main one for programs where the Adobe-installed profiles would be.

Can you just reinstall the VSCO presets that might put the profiles where they need to be?  Or if the .dcp files are in the above-mentioned folder, already, then there is probably a problem with the syntax of the new .XMP preset file in how it refers to them.  Maybe the conversion went bad and the profile name is munged.  You could inspect the contents of the XMP file after verifying the .dcp files are in the correct place, and make any tweaks to fix the syntax.  Make a backup copy of the XMP file somewhere else outside where the presets reside before you attempt to edit it, in case what you do messes it up.

It might be worth contacting VSCO to see what they say.  If these presets got renamed in LR 7.3 that was near the beginning of April and surely someone else would have had this problem and they may be able to advise what to do.  If I had VSCO presets I could probably figure out what to do and tell you, but I don't.

All files are in there proper folders. There seems to be an issue with the XMP locating the DCP. I verified the xmp files and the naming seems correct, but there is no obvious dcp path. Ive pasted the xmp file below, let me know if anything seems to be off.

The DCP files are located in camera raw, as they should and i assume the dcp file for this preset would be the following: .../CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/VSCO Film 07 Leica Profiles/LEICA M (Typ 262) Optima 100 II - L.dcp

Be specific as to where this profile file is located on your computer.

Your profile should still be in their original folder:

DCP profiles (such as those created by XRite Passport, the Adobe DNG Profile Creator, as well as 3rd parties like VSCO, RNI, etc.) are stored the user profile location:

Mac: Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / CameraRaw / CameraProfiles /

    Windows: C: \ Users \ [your username] \ AppData \ Roaming \ Adobe \ CameraRaw \ CameraProfiles \

What has changed is where you access/apply them from. V7.3 has a new Profile Browser located in the Develop module Basic panel. Click on the button that looks like 4 squares in top right corner of Basic panel to open the browser. Custom camera profiles should be accessible from the Profiles segment of the browser.

    Thanks Ian,

My profiles were created using X-Rite Colour Passport.

I don’t seem to have a library file under my user profile. There’s a Library folder for all users, which has application support in it but can’t see anything in there.

I’d seen the profile panel in the Develop Basic section but this only shows the standard Adobe ones.

Any thoughts? Ws fine before the update.

Try creating the the user folder then copy your profiles into same.
