Cannot manage files whatsoever w/LrC (Windows 11, LrC 12.1)

New Here ,
Jan 19, 2023 Jan 19, 2023

I recently upgraded from CC (6.?) to Classic (12.1), other than that nothing has changed. Same PC, same storage locations, same permissions, same, same, same.

Previously, I could bulk-delete (from disk) everything I tagged as rejects from within the library. I could drag/drop files or folders in the catalog to move them around. I could rename folders. Now, none of this works.

I've searched as I know how and none of the suggested solutions seem to apply here. I tried starting LrC as admin, nada...but as I said, absolutely nothing about the environment has changed (beyong the Lr version) and permissions were such previously that it all worked flawlessly.

There's a 2nd issue, which I suspect is related. That is, I can no longer import directly from either the camera or the SD card...files have to be copied (in Explorer) from the camera to a disk, then imported in place on the disk. I'm thinking whatever file blocking is happening is also preventing LrC from creating them (via copy) at import.

Thanks for any ideas!

Are your files on an internal, external disk or NAS?

Both a local SSD and a NAS device. Again, neither location has changed in any way from the functional CC install. Same, same.

Also, for the record, the LrC catalog location is on the same local (internal) SSD as one of the photo store locations (different folders obviously), and LrC has no issues there. I work locally on the SSD for speed, then move the culled folders to the NAS.

I doubt your issue is the catalog. However, there are other recent posts from Synology NAS users describing similar behaviour to yourself. If I recall correctly, Synology recently released an update recently that impacts on permissions.

NAS is a Windows file server, not Synology. Perfectly functional in every other role it fills.

Saying it doesn't work isn't that helpful. Describe in detail the steps do you perform. Exactly (describe in detail) what happens? If there is an error message, please quote the exact complete unedited word-for-word error message.

Really? I check all the boxes and hit delete, it asks from disk or catalog, I say disk, it says could not be moved to recycle bin. ctrl-alt-shift-del behaves the same. Drag/drop movement says error copying/file could not be moved to destination. Rename says folder could not be renamed or moved.

Recycle bin is not full. Disk is not full. Even if I change the bin settings on that drive to delete immediately and not recycle, same problem.

it says could not be moved to recycle bin.

Drag/drop movement says error copying/file could not be moved to destination.

Rename says folder could not be renamed or moved.

What are the complete unedited exact word-for-word error messages?

I've searched as I know how and none of the suggested solutions seem to apply here.

Did that include resetting a possible corrupt preference file?

Did not. Could that affect file management?

A corrupt preference file can and often does affect file management along with a long list of other functions. You can reset the preferences as described in Method 1 at:

Having ruled out the alternatives, the behaviour you describe leaves permissions as the most likley candiadate. You've already stated that these haven't changed, but I think it's still something you should look into.

I'm an IT professional and have checked them. I even granted the everyone user full control of the entire local SSD as a test. Nada.

The folders have to have the proper permissions. Setting permissions on the entire local SSD (the entire drive) does not change permissions on individual folders.

It does when you enable inheritance.
I manage many Windows file servers and am quite familar with assigning permissions.

I can no longer import directly from either the camera or the SD card..

When in the import screen, on the left, the source, are you selecting Device, or Files? Adobe post v6, decided Device could have issues, and prefers to select Files.

Both...

I used to (and would prefer to) import from the camera directly...which appears as a device. Tethered capture works well, so I'm assuming the USB communication w/Lr is good. Camera Raw is up to date as well (15.1). Camera is a D500.

If I pull a card and use a card reader, it shows up as a drive (files)...but that doesn't work either.

If I use Explorer to copy the files to the local SSD that I work from (whether from the card reader or direct from the camera), they copy fine and then I can use files to import them where they lie (add).

The import process fails at the very end...I see the files, select them, select destination/options (copy), and finally click the import button at bottom right. The process starts and I get the progress bar at top left, but zero progress...it just hangs there until I cancel.

Not of any importance. Remember ACR is internal to LrC, not a plug-in as for PS. Ok, just an annoying point.

see the files, select them, select destination/options (copy)

May not solve underlying problem. But..

When you use File Explorer to copy those images to the hard drive, I assume you place them in the desired folder that you want them in when editing in LrC. So selecting Copy was nit the best selection. Instead select Add. If you did not copy to the desired folder, go back and fix that.

If the import via Add works when import via Copy fails?? hmm

Yes, exactly. Import as add (already in-place) works, but I still can't move/delete/rename. Import as copy fails.

Speaking to the bulk delete and file move:

Some consideration about use of a file server (not NAS) for storage of photos (not catalog)

A experiment, Create some new folders, using the LrC folders panel, these folders on your hard drive, not the server. Go and shoot some photos, import them into one or more of the new photos. See if you can bulk delete some, see if you can bulk move some.

Point being to make sure none of the folders or photos reside on the server for the experiment. Point if the experiment to see if the presence in the folder panel, hence records in the database is a issue.

You may also want to accomplish the same experiment, but using a new catalog.

One point: Adobe does not support storing the catalog on any sort of server share, not a file server, not a NAS, not a cloud share, things eventually break, catalogs get corrupted. They do sort of support storing photos on such shares, but that often leads to missing photos, missing folders (fixable, but annoying)
