Cannot stop Compare Mode behavior

Question

Since this morning I cannot select one image/file at a time. Lightroom seems to automatically select images. Scenarios:

*All scenarios are in Loupe or Grid Mode*

Type ctrl+D (deselect all). Lightroom will select the 1st 2 images automatically after 2 seconds.
Click to select a different image, Lightroom keeps 1 of the two above selected making it 2 selected at all times.
ctrl-click any other image, it keeps 2 selected.
ctrl-click the 2 that are selected... LR auto selects the 1st 2 images in the folder AGAIN.

Attempted fixes:

Optimized catelog
Restart PC
Restart Lightroom
Checked the batteries in keyboard and mouse
Tested a different catalog, folder, collection.
I'm updated via CC and running a solid machine.

Any mixture of the above hasn't helped. I see random diamonds in the upper right of the thumb but I am NOT in compare mode. I cannot export or develop images because it exports or applies the development to unwanted images.

I, unknowingly, had the 2nd display turned on. I couldn't see it because I had the 2nd monitor is use with my work laptop. The 2nd display was in Compare Mode. It's odd that the primary interface had Loupe or Grid mode selected but the filmstrip behaved according to the 2nd display. A little frustrating but it's resolved.

COMPARE view aways automatically selects two photos. This behavior changed somewhere around Lightroom 4. I have gotten used to it as it probably won't change to the old behavior.
