Catalog won't open (.lrcat file type problems?)

Hello! I have my catalog saved onto a external hard drive and have never had any problems opening it. Today when I went to open it, a Microsoft screen popped up that said, "How would you like to open this file?" and then gave me the option to look for an app in the Store. After doing some research online, I deleted the lrcat lock file but it still will not open. Why won't my computer open it?

Thanks!

Hi pianovortex,

Sorry that you can no longer open your Lightroom catalog saved on an external drive.

What version of Lightroom are you on and is your catalog zipped within folder?

It seems that the catalog you're working with might've lost the ".lrcat" extension that links it to Lightroom. Have you tried opening the catalog directly from Lightroom? This discussion might be of some help: lrcat files are zipped and unable to open

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Akash

Can you open the catalog from within LR using the menu command File > Open Catalog?

I can think of two reasons why such a message appears (and there might be more than two, but I haven't thought of more than 2)

  1. Somehow, the connection between the file type .LRCAT and Lightroom has been changed or erased.
  2. Lightroom is no longer installed
