Color layering of the background

Does anyone know what causes layering in the background? I did apply  bit of post-crop vignetting, but the changes of light aren't gradual, they occur in bands around the subject: Image with layering in background

Note that the Jpg XL format is not as well supported as regular jpg yet, and it may not be supported by Flickr.

You might want to use regular jpg at 85 quality for the time being.

This is banding caused by jpg compression, and can happen in smooth areas if Quality is set to a too low value when exporting. Try exporting with Quality set to 85.

If you're already using a high quality setting, it could be that Flickr is compressing images when they're posted.

I don't use Flickr, so I don't know how they handle images.

      What exactly is your workflow? Jpg or raw in the camera? Have these images been to Photoshop and back?

      Are you working with .jpg images? .jpg images are 8 bit. The banding/layering effect is typical of pushing 8 bit images too hard. The way to avoid it is to shoot in raw and keep the image in 16 bit mode during processing.

      I'm working in LrC, not in Photoshop at all. The banding shows in the solid background. I used the new Noise Reduction feature and did a bit of post-crop vignetting. There is no banding in the RAW file, but when I export the file, the jpeg has the banding. Exporting it at higher quality as as suggested below by Per Berntsen solved the problem. Thanks!

      Adding a little noise was/is one way to suppress the appearance of 'banding'.
