Crop ratio constantly changes to 'original' even after locked to custom setting.

MAC OS 10

Lightroom 2015.4 release

Steps taken: Open develop, click on crop, unlock padlock, select ratio of 2x3 (then padlock automatically closes), drag / move crop area - then ratio switches straight back to "Original".   Printing photos at the "Original" ration leads to unwanted cropping of the prints.

How can I set the default ratio for all of my prints to be 2x3? If that is not possible, how to I lock it on each one?

The crop tool always opens showing the aspect ratio in which the image was taken. The lock may or may not be set. That depends on how it was set at the beginning of the previous cropping session. But you cannot set a "custom" crop ratio as a default crop ratio.

To be clear for the OP, the padlock in Crop does not control any persistent attribute of the image, nor of its crop boundary.

This option is just a mode for LR's behaviour, as to what will happen IF you drag the corners or sides of the crop boundary.

    • If unlocked, dragging a side grip or a corner grip will change the aspect (shape) of the cropped image freely.
    • If locked, the side and corner grips are constrained to only scale the crop bigger and smaller, without changing its shape.

Unfortunately a particular crop / aspect ratio cannot be saved into a Develop preset, which would obviously be the neatest way to apply a desired crop to newly imported or to currently imported images. Nor is that included when you save user customised camera default processing.

But using AutoSync, you can highlight a whole batch of images and choose a desired aspect ratio for them all:

either doing so in Quick Develop in the Library module, or else in the Develop module's Crop tool.

Thanks for the suggestion of auto sync, I will have a play with that today.

In relation to your explanation of how the locking works, that is not what I am experiencing.

If I unlock, set the ratio to 2x3, lock it. Then when I drag the corners to adjust the crop, it changes the aspect to 'Original', even though the lock is locked! As soon as I try to move the edges or corners of the crop it jumps straight to 'Original'!

The ratio 2x3 is 'original' for many cameras.

So even if you select 2x3 it changes the chosen aspect text back to 'original' as you have not altered the aspect of your crop.

What size prints are you trying to make?

I am trying to make 10 x 15 cm prints - standard small print size in Australia.

I don't think the original ratio is 2 x 3 because if I leave the crop at 'original' then print it, parts of the image are missing.

I wondered if it was the print place I was using, so tried a couple of other online ones and could see the same thing happening.

Why are you still running LR 2015.4 when there have been 10+ updates to LR 2015 and a New version with 2 updates so far to LR Classic 7.1.

If you are changing images the Crop tool will default back to the default aspect ratio which is Original when the lock icon is in the Locked position.

If you want it Unlocked the select an image, Click the lock icon to unlock it then click the Done button at the bottom of the image window.

When you switch to a new image the Lock icon will stay unlocked. But it will return back to Original as the aspect ratio.

Thanks! I had no idea how old my version was. Now updated.

If I follow your steps I do not have a 'Done' button.

I have an image open in the 'develop' module, click on the crop icon, click on the lock to unlock it.

    But no 'Done' button.

At the bottom of the crop preferences there is 'reset' and 'close'.

At the bottom of the develop window there is a 'previous' and 'reset' button.
