When the preferences file gets corrupted, LR can start behaving unpredictably, with all sorts of intermittent, flaky behavior. There are dozens and dozens of posts here about all different kinds of problems being fixed by resetting the preferences. Unfortunately, there is no definitive pattern as to which things are fixed by resetting and which aren't, so we end up recommending trying it in many circumstances in which it turns out that resetting doesn't have any impact.
"Something is not quite clear for me resseting preferences file: what exactely is lost?"
See the article I linked to above.
It's tedious to get LR back to the way you like it after resetting preferences. But the article explains how to make a backup copy of your preferences and restore it if resetting doesn't help. If resetting does help, then you can choose whether you want to fix the flaky behavior or live with it.
