Question

Does LrC on Mac use Metal 3?

I'm about to buy an eGPU for my Mac Mini in order to be able to use the new DeNoise function and I'm leaning towards a cheap Radeon RX580-based one. However, Apple has indicated that this GPU doesn't support Metal 3. It'd be a bummer if Lightroom started to use the Metal 3 framework and made my purchase essentially useless. Any views?

Get the most modern and fastest GPU you can afford for this! Ideally, M1/M2 Mac!

My 2022 MacBook Pro* 16" processes 24MP raws in 12 seconds zero issues.

I'm on budget and only want to invest the bare minimum before eventually getting a new rig. Currently leaning towards the Vega 64 but having a sweet deal pending with an RX580, hence my question 🙂

Lightroom Classic uses the Metal framework, but doesn't specify which version. You can see the full set of requirements at https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/lightroom-classic/system-requirements.html

and Apple's suuport document https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205073

Note that there's nothing in either document to indicate that lesser GPUs won't work, but I very much doubt you'll see the level of performance that M1/M2 Macs are providing in Lightroom Classic, etc.
