Embed Previews on older files in Classic

The recent v7.1 update helped make my system usable.

I imported a card of images this afternoon with the Embed Previews turned on, then was able to quickly go through them to cull them (in the past, I used Photo Mechanic for this step).

I am looking for a way to let LR Classic go through a folder of old images and add the embedded previews to help me cull those files quicker.

The only option I see is to let LR create 1:1 previews during idle times.

Thanks in advance, MJ

Just a few notes:

1: On my system, turning on Embed Previews during import slows the system down considerably, and it keeps me from editing images while it is importing. If I know this up front, I to start the import and then do something else for a while.

2: In my earlier workflow with LR 2015, all editing functions worked during the import. That let me pick a few images to post to my blog while additional images imported.

3: My current catalog has 500,000 images, which might have something to do with the slow down. It wasn't a factor with the previous version, however.

Hi again,

The whole idea of using the embedded previews is to view them quickly, then either mark the file with P, X, (or U). If X, I can control-backspace to delete the rejects.

In v7.01, once downloaded, the preview image shows "Embedded Preview" in the lower corner, and also with an indicator icon on the image that shows me I am looking at the embedded preview. New files with the embedded previews can be toggled through very quickly and marked with an X for culling. If I knock down 50-80% of the images using this technique, I can save a lot of time before I try to edit any of them. Once develop setting is applied, the "Embedded Preview" goes away. This is exactly what we've been asking for for years.

I want to let LR revert my slow loading 1:1 images to Embedded Previews so I can go through them as quickly as I can the new images now. I have around 100,000 of them to go through at the moment.

I tried moving a group of images to a temporary folder, then "remove" them from the catalog, and finally reimporting from the same folder. On at least one initial try, it didn't embed the preview. That would have been a workable option for me.

My cameras: Nikon D5, Nikon D500, and Nikon D850.

So you saying you do need to use 1:1 Zoom View for culling and 1:1 Previews have not been created for these 100,000 image files, correct? If you haven't edited these images, added keywords, ratings, or placed them in collections, etc then you can 'Remove' (NOT Delete) them from LR and then reimport them from the same folder location. No need to move them!

1) Select the images in the LR Library module Grid view and hit the Delete key. Next select 'Remove.' To also select the image files in subfolders below the top-level folder go to menu Library and check 'Show photos in subfolders' and then Select All (CTRL +A).

2) Right-click on the folder, select 'Synchronize Folder' and then check 'Show import dialog before importing. In the import module make sure 'Embedded & Sidecar' is checked as shown below. The files should import and display quickly with the embedded preview.

You post is confusing.....First you say: "I imported a card of images this afternoon with the Embed Previews turned on, then was able to quickly go through them to cull them (in the past, I used Photo Mechanic for this step)."

Then you say: "On my system, turning on Embed Previews during import slows the system down considerably, and it keeps me from editing images while it is importing."

So which is it and what is the question?

Next you ask: "I am looking for a way to let LR Classic go through a folder of old images and add the embedded previews to help me cull those files quicker. The only option I see is to let LR create 1:1 previews during idle times."

For this second question the files previously imported (old images) should already have standard previews built and available for culling, LR does this in the background after the files are imported. If you need to review the image files at 1:1 Zoom View and not Standard Fit and Fill View size then you will need to select the image files and go to menu Library> Previews> Build 1:1 Previews.

Sorry for the confusion...

Version 7.01 works like I want it to work when I have Embed Previews turned on during the import, (but I have to wait for all of the images to download before I can do any editing. I hope they fix that issue in a future update, knowing I could edit while downloading in LR 2015.)

Those comments were observations, suggesting that Embed Previews solves the culling issue on all new imported images.

But, I have thousands of images that need to be culled through, and since they were imported prior to LR Classic, non of them recognize the original capture's embedded JPG preview image. I am looking for the option in LR Classic to display the embedded JPG images for faster culling in those older images. That was the reference to Photo Mechanic. It displays the JPG for quicker culling than having to wait for the LR images to render.

I think there is some confusion concerning the new option to use embedded previews during Import to speed culling workflow. The below setting is I assume what you mean, Import> File Handling> Build Previews 'Embedded & Sidecar.' This uses the camera's embedded preview inside the raw file instead of creating Standard or 1:1 previews, which takes much longer. You still have to wait for the files to be imported into the catalog file and copied to HDD for import from a memory card or USB camera connection. But it should be much faster!

Sony, Olympus, and Fuji cameras don’t have full sized embedded previews and if the embedded preview size is 50% of the raw image size Standard previews are created instead of using the embedded preview. This may be what you are seeing? If not please let me know what camera model and file types you are importing.

Why???? The embedded preview is created in-camera using your camera's picture style settings and it is rarely the same as LR's "default settings" rendering. If your goal is to edit these image files using LR then this is a bad idea. If your goal is to try and make the LR raw file rendering look like the camera's embedded JPEG rendering you're better off setting your camera to shoot raw + JPEG and then use the Reference mode with the companion JPEG in the LR Develop module to create a Develop preset with settings and camera profile to achieve that objective with the raw files. You are importing raw files correct?

Older image files imported into LR should already have Standard previews created and ready for use in culling. If not please explain what you are seeing and what your Catalog Settings> File Handling> Standard Preview Size is set to as below. It should be set to 'Auto' for best results.
