Question

Export Slideshow to Video: How to make embedded videos full screen?

  • October 10, 2021

MacOS 11.3 Big Sur

Lightroom Classic 10.4

MacBook Pro 2013

I've created a small test slideshow three 1080p videos and a few images.  I use the built in Widescreen template for the slideshow.  I am expecting that an exported video of the slideshow would show the 1080p videos filling the screen.

When I play the slideshow, the videos are surrounded by black areas instead of being displayed full width.  When I export the slideshow to video at 1080p, the videos appear about half the size of the 1080p video screen, surrounded by even larger black areas than when the slideshow is played live.  If I use the standard Export... feature of Lightroom to export one of the videos to 1080p H264, it fills the 1080p export screen as expected.  I've attached screenshots below of the various views of the video being played and exported.

There is no difference if "Zoom to Fill" is chosen, and no difference if the GPU is enabled or disabled.

How can I get the videos to play at the correct size?  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Jon

Just adding that in Oct 2024 I'm seeing this as well. This is the thread I found; there doesn't seem to be any solution.

My case:

Slideshow with images and four video clips. Two of the clips are 4k, two are HD resolution. The two HD clips aren't "zoomed to fill screen" resulting in the attached image. Similar thing happened with some of the lower-resolution (less than 4k) still images.

Zoom to fill screen is checked on.

This is Lightroom classic 13.5.1 on Macbook pro 14in 2023 w/M2 pro chipset.

My sense is that the zoom to fill screen does not act on individual files but rather the highest resolution of a specific filetype. Then lower resolution images/videos of the same type are scaled with the higher resolution in mind.

I removed the lower res images (I had lots of alternates) but need the two HD videos.

There doesn't seem to be any solution—way to, say, double resolution of videos so that they appear full screen (albeit perhaps lower visual quality).

Forgot to ask, what is the format of the original videos? Video in Lightroom is very flaky in my experience and weird issues are often fixed by simple reboots. I think this has to do with helper processes (notably dynamiclinkmediaserver) that Lightroom Classic uses to decode and display video. They are very fragile for some reason.

"I can try the preferences reset when I can get a hold of the laptop again. Do you think the preferences could have been corrupted right out of the box like that?"

If this was a new installation on a laptop with no previous version of Lightroom installed the Preferences file is not likely the cause of your issue. As Jao mentions this can happen if the the video or picture files are less than 1080p (1920x1080) resolution. Select the original files used for creating the video (one at a time) and in the Library module's left side Metadata panel see what is listed for EXIF> Dimensions.

Yes, each of the videos is 1080p.  Interestingly, I created a Windows 10 virtual machine in Parallels, and when I preview or play the slideshow, the videos show full screen.  Unfortunately, when I try to Export to Slideshow, Lightroom Classic starts the export, then hangs for a few minutes and then crashes.  I'm getting blocked at every turn!

We've reviewed the email address you use with this forum and find no crash reports in our system.

Did you see a crash dialog?

Do you use a different email address when filling out the crash report?

Was the crash dialog Adobe or Apple?

Any chance you could post a screenshot of the Crash Dialog?

Not seeing anything remotely like this on my MBP running Big Sur and Classic 10.4. Exported slideshow (used the 1080p option) fills the quicktime window and fills the screen when run full screen in quicktime player. It's also full screen when I hit play in Lightroom Classic itself. What is the resolution of your originals? I think this doesn't work right if your originals are not high enough resolution for the size of the exported video.

I'm not seeing this issue on my Windows 10 system using LrC 10.4. A 1080p export video slideshow created with a 5616x3744 raw image file and a 1080p video file both playback at 100% view (1920x1080) on my 2560x1440 display. Try resetting your LrC Prferences file as outlined at the below link. It can become corrupted over time from the version update process and cause strange issues such as you are experiencing here.

Thank you for the reply.  I'm glad to hear that it at least works on a Windows 10 installation (not that I have one to access).  This is happening on a brand new install of Lightroom Classic 10.4 on a laptop that's never had any Adobe products on it.  I borrowed it from a family member to see if I could get the slideshow export to work (won't work on my macOS Catalina laptop, but that's another discussion thread: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/lightroom-classic-slideshow-export-to-video-hangs-when-video-is-included-as-part-of-the-slideshow/m-p/12400918#M244133).
