Extremely Slow lightroom import/use performance
Hello All,
I have been using Lightroom for several years now and I have never had a problem with its performance aside from a few little quirks.
Whenever I have used Lightroom, it is always a case where I have a high end PC. I have built all my PC's and have never used one (for personal use) that comes fully built from a factory.
This being said, the GPU's in the computers I have used have always aided Lightroom in its operations. I have never had had to disable the GPU acceleration in the preferences.
This time, it is a bit different. I recently built a brand-new computer utilizing AMD's new Threadripper 2950X along with an AMD Vega 64 GPU. Whenever I tried importing, in this case it was 835 24mpx photos, Lightroom would begin the importing process but it would take an abysmally long time, and during this import it took 6 hours!!! That is ridiculous. I restarted my computer (several times) checked my hardware, software, antivirus, firewall, malware....you name it, I checked it. I also did research on this forum but to no avail...there was no fix. I upped the cache size to 20GB, that didn't help either. Like I said, I have NEVER had this problem before. Lightroom would always import at a reasonable speed. Lightroom is fully up to date. Drivers up to date, OS up to date. No viruses or malware.
In one of my last troubleshooting instances, I decided to turn off GPU acceleration and Lightroom magically decided to work the way it was meant to work. After 3 days of trouble shooting, the simple answer was to uncheck a box in the preferences.
Anyone else having this type of issue, but was able to fix it another way?
I am not sure as to why Lightroom is not communicating with the GPU correctly, or if it is a hardware snag on my end, maybe a software issue??? I don't know, it works as it should now.
TL;DR - If you are experiencing horrible import performance, disable GPU acceleration in the preferences.
