Facial recognition not working the way I expected

Newb here.  I'm switching from Picassa to Lightroom Classic for my photo management.  I had it index my 16K+ pix and verified that it seemed to recognize a lot of faces (seemingly miraculously because I didn't tell it who any of them were; I assume it grabbed that info from metadata created by Picassa).  I haven't tested it extensively, but I noticed that it only returns a single picture of someone ("Buddy") who it correctly listed under Named People and for whom there are several pictures.  This happens when searching on the person's first name under Text, Any Searchable Field, and Contains All.  Plus, the picture it returns is different from the one it shows under Named People.  What's going on?

Try these-  Selecting [All Photographs] in the catalog panel, Search for [Metadata] Keywords > Contains > buddy.

Or in the Keyword List panel - filter the panel view for [People] and look through named people, or simply enter "buddy" in the keyword search box.

My Metadata options don't include "Keywords > Contains."  The keyword List panel only indicates one photo contains "Buddy."  Entering "buddy" in the Search box yields the ski photo shown in the included image (you can see the search box there), not the "Buddy Brown" photo in the inset.

I might have misled you with "Metadata"..- Search for 'Text' and search for text in Keywords-

Search for [Text] Keywords > Contains > buddy.  (Don't use 'Contains All'.)

In your screen-clips face detection has identified 12 photos of 'Buddy Brown'. Is there a "Buddy Brown" anywhere in your Keyword List panel?

Rob_Cullen_0-1738273407882.png

In my example- Face detection has identified  7 photos of "Priest" and a search in [People] keywords indicates 7 photos with this KW.

Using your settings I still only find the one ski image.  There is a Buddy Brown in my Keyword List, but it shows 0 images with that keyword.

Sorry but I am really out of ideas. I cannot help suggest what "switching from Picassa" has done for the keywords (I have never used Picassa). So I only have questions-

Did you do a Search for [Text] Keywords > Contains > buddy. using these exact words? (Don't use 'Contains All'.)

If you select the 'ski photo' - what Keywords are shown for it in the [Keywording] panel?

If you select the 'ski photo' - what Keywords are showing with a Tick/check mark in the [Keyword List] panel?   Post a screen-clip of the KWs for the 'ski photo'.

Screencaps attached.  There's a second picture of Buddy now (from my wedding), but only because I deliberately added his name to its Keywords.  I assume it's one of the 12 in which Lightroom had previously identified him, even if it wouldn't find him in a search.  Thanks so much for taking the time to try to help.

I am not positive, but your screen-clips suggest to me that you have two "Buddy Brown" keywords in the Keyword List, one of which is not in the Parent KW "People", and may not be marked as a 'Person Keyword'. (first clip below)

Have you done an "All" search for "Buddy" in the KW List? (Not in the Library Filter!)

Me- still "Grasping at straws"

As you can see below, LR seems to find two "buddys" within People, but it only shows one.  Still no sign of the other 10 it identified during recognition.

Another mystery in the universe.!

Those two keywords for "Buddy Brown"-  Edit each keyword to see if they are marked as 'Person' type keywords.

Rob_Cullen_0-1738526583864.png

Having one "Buddy Brown" under a parent KW "People" does not indicate for sure that it is marked as 'Person'.

And I see some anomolies in your first screen-clip,  'things' that look different to my view in LrC-

1) The name next to [Named People]- I don't see that

2) A thin line (of images) at the top of the window

3) The 'mug shot' of "Buddy Brown" strangely placed on the screen-

2025-02-03 06_00_25-Clipboard.jpg    My screen- 2025-02-03 06_09_35-Clipboard.jpg

Keep searching for answers.

Edit each keyword ...

I'm not sure what you're asking for.

The name next to [Named People]- I don't see that

I only get that if I click on one of the images in that section.  Then the person's name appears in the header.

A thin line (of images) at the top of the window

I assume that's a function of the size of the thumbnails and the resolution of your scroll-wheel.

The 'mug shot' of "Buddy Brown" strangely placed on the screen-

I blacked out the surrounding images in Photoshop to prevent distraction and make it easier to see the image that was causing the problem.

[Right-Click] on each Keyword in the Keyword List panel and [Edit Keyword]- Do they have the [Person] box checked?  (Face recognition named persons creates a 'Person' keyword. Picassa- I don't know compatability.)

> The name next to [Named People]- I don't see that

Yes, my mistake, I see the name on the header also when an image is 'clicked'..

Good Oh- That explains that.

I am not being much more help unfortunately. I can only go back to your "Picassa" comment without an explanation.
