Highlights clipping

Hello everyone,

 

I noticed a big difference if I'm using the highlights clipping on Lightroom or Lightroom Classic or ACR and highlights clipping with Photoshop.

The photos edited with Levels and saved with Photoshop have better colours, and general lights.

In the photo I attached you can see also that the photo saved with Lightroom is orange and not red.

 

Can you help me to understand how to do the same, somple, thing I can do with Levels in Photoshop but using Lightroom? I tried also to use the curves with the linear mode but is not the same thing of Levels in Photoshop.

    Hello everyone,

     

    I wnat to understand how to reproduce the same blacks and whites clipping I can set with Levels on Photoshop but using Lightroom.

    I did a lot of tries and I noticed that the most accurate result is to stop with blacks and whites sliders on Lightroom when the little triangls on the histogram start to show the first colours clipping. But there is still a difference!

    To understand the difference you can see how different are the histogram showed by Photo Mechanic.

    To show clipping or a gamut warning, an application must reference something to define what the clipping points are. This can differ among applications. If you want the clipping and gamut warnings to look the same across applications, all applications must be set to the same color settings.

     

    For Adobe photo applications, clipping points and gamut warnings refer to the current color settings.

     

    Adobe Photoshop. Clipping is based on the document color space. If a document does not have an embedded color profile, Photoshop uses the Working Space setting in Edit > Color Settings for the color model of the document (RGB if it’s from Lightroom). You can enable soft-proofing to preview colors in another supported color space.

    Adobe Camera Raw. Clipping and color appearance is based on the workflow color space. This is the color space selected in the Workflow settings, which is also displayed in the underlined text at the bottom of the Camera Raw window (it’s underlined to let you know that you can click that text to change the settings).

    Adobe Lightroom Classic. Clipping is based on the ProPhoto color space, and cannot be changed. You can enable soft-proofing to preview colors in another supported color space.

    Adobe Lightroom. Clipping is based on the ProPhoto color space (I think), and cannot be changed.

     

    So if you are previewing colors and setting clipping points in Lightroom and Photoshop, but the current Photoshop document is using color settings that do not match Lightroom, then Photoshop will mark clipping at different levels than Lightroom.

     

    This is easiest to observe in Adobe Camera Raw, where if you enable the shadow and highlight clipping warnings and then change the color space, as soon as you apply that change you will instantly see the clipping warnings cover different areas.

      Even using the same colour space, the difference remains. I can't find a way to achieve the same results as I get using Levels in Photoshop but with Lightroom. Whites works different and also Curves...
