Question

How can I upload original files without LR classic creating a useless additional local copy?

I have LR classic synced with the cloud, working with smartpreview online is great.

But as a cloud backup option I would like to store some orignals.

Problem is, if I upload them with LR web or LR non classic, LR Classic instead of recognizing "Yep, I have that im my library, I will link that and not download it again" it says, "uh I have that in my library, let me download it again" and puts a useless copy in the web download folder of a file that is already in its library. And if I deleted that it gets deleted from the cloud. I don't need 1 TB of data doubled. Also don't want to move 1 TB of data manually from the download folder overwriting the same files copy in its original folder.

LR Classic need to recognize that and not redownload a file that is already there in the same exact state.
LR Classic should have the option to "push original file to the cloud" from the library module so I could just select multiple files and make online copies in the cloud replacing already shared smartpreviews. And a way to remove them and go back to smartpreviews.

Both LR mobile and classic should be able to filter for smartpreview or original file to easily find and organize them.

So you are saying I could do this with Lightroom (nonclassic) Desktop but not via the webinteface?

Yes. Use Lightroom desktop, not Lightroom web.

Still seems not well thought through. LR classic should recognize its the same image it all ready has in its database, well it sort of does because its renaming it and adding a _1 to it after redownloading.

Sounds like you create a backup copy that you upload to the cloud. That is not the way to do this. If you import the original image from its original location in Lightroom desktop, then Lightroom desktop will understand that this the same image as the smart preview that is already in the cloud. It will replace that smart preview by the original and then Lightroom Classic will not download it again.

Just on thought, does Lightroom Desktop apply the edits done in LrC when the originals are uploaded if xmp is not stored with the image from LrC?

Yes it does. The xmp is not used for anything in this process. As long as you have first synced the image from Classic - creating a new smart preview in the cloud - before you import the full raw into Lightroom Desktop, the full raw will simply be added to the image already known to Lightroom Desktop. Since the full edits will be already in the cloud, there is no extra step. This works perfectly and I have been doing it for quite a while. Of course something that Adobe does might break this process in the future as this is not an officially supported workflow at all.
