How do I import iPhone HEIF images into Lightroom Classic CC on Mac?

  • Lightroom Classic CC 8.1 Build 1200465
  • Camera Raw 11.1
  • macOS Mojave 10.14.2
  • iPhone XS Max—iOS 12.1.2

Clicking [Import...] button, then selecting my tethered iPhone as I have for years to import the JPG formatted images, I get no results to import HEIF/DNG with the message "No photos found."

Since updating to a new iPhone at Christmas, I can not see/import photos. I've shot in the Camera app and in Lightroom CC app:

  • Camera app in Settings is set to High Efficiency HEIF/HEVC (604 photos/59 videos in photo library)
  • Lightroom CC app file format set to DNG (809 files in LRCC storage)

It seems like at a minimum, I should be able to import from Photos and frankly, even from the Lightroom CC app files. In fact, Lightroom CC should be easier, app to app.

I can use Lightroom cloud Sync from what I've read, but I live in the country and would prefer to not burn up my wifi/streaming when I should be able to tether and transfer as I always have.

I appreciate any ideas/solutions. Thanks. !

On my iOS11 device I had to change a preference setting.

Go to: Settings >> Photos >> Transfer to Mac or PC

Choose “Keep Originals”

This was previously set to automatic which results in conversion to jpeg. But after changing this setting files remained as HEIC.

I tried this and it's still not working for me. I've got the same issue as the original poster. I changed the setting, signed out/back in to LR, turned phone off/on. Still nothing. Thoughts?

Thanks, that worked, my photos (HEIF and a few of my JPG exports) instantly appeared in the import screen (after undocking and re-docking after the setting change) and my workflow is restored.
