Question

How to migrate from Lightroom 3 to Lr Classic or Lr

So I cannot locate any good guides for this, and figured I would ask before I even attempted to try anything.  I have all my old photography from 2008-2011 (about 10,000 images) on an older Mac Pro in Lightroom 3. I have been putting off migrating, but the age of the machine is begining to worry me.  I have a new PC coming and will subscribe to the 1TB photography bundle which will give all the new Lr and Ps versions.  I need to get my old Lightroom catalog and images over to the cloud and/or Lr classic.

The thought of losing all my File structure, flags, stars rankings, edit history, etc just makes me sick, which is why I have put this off.... but the time to face the music is here.

Any how-tos or advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance!

Additionally research if you want the Lightroom 1 TB plan or the Photography Plan (20 GB).  They contain different Lightroom applications.  Lightroom 1TB contains Lightroom Desktop and the Photography Plan contains Lightroom Classic.  Lightroom Classic is the actual successor to your Lightroom 3. Lightroom Desktop (1TB) is a different application but migratable from your old Lightroom 3 catalog.

I was planning on getting the Photography plan (1TB), which seems to have all the various PS and Lr applications  (classic and cloud).... is this not correct?  All these new and various versions of the same application is a little confusing lol

You would only need the 1TB plan if you intend to share most or all of your photos in the cloud and your photos take up more than 20GB. If you only intend to share some of the photos, or none of the photos, the 20GB plan is fine.

  • Do not skip any steps (except the part about moving Windows to Mac or Mac to Windows if it doesn't apply)
  • Do not make up your own steps.
  • Follow the instructions literally and exactly.
  • Do not import photos on the new computer.

I will check this out, thank you!

I see there that this is for migrating to a new computer.... does this apply to going from an old and very out of date version of Lightroom (Lr3) to the latest version of either classic or cloud?
