How to see the brush's location

Usually when using the brush there's a bar above the line of photos in your folder that allows you to click a checkbox to see what parts of the photo the brush is effecting. I know the keyboard shortcut is 'O' for this action, but why is that bar no longer there? Any chance someone knows the setting I could change to fix this? thank you!
