I have lightroom 6 and I want to upgrade. Do I have to buy Lightroom classic or is there a way to upgrade to the lastest version using my old serial number?

You did not state which version you are looking for. Dependent on your situation you cane select from 3 flavors. There are a few variables with each to select from. If you have a desktop that is no more than 8 years old you can subscribe to the monthly photography plan $9.99 per month. Suggest going to the Adobe Plans and select

Lightroom Classic IS the "latest version" of Lightroom 6 (the Classic name was introduced when LR6 was upgraded to version 7, and Classic is currently at version 13), but it is only available with an Adobe subscription which has a different authentication model than was used with your LR6. So your old serial number would not be used. If you decide to purchase a subscription, and you want to use Lightroom Classic (as it will be far more familiar to you than the alternative cloud-centric Lightroom version), make sure you select the Photography Plan (includes Classic, Photoshop, Lightroom Desktop, optional cloud syncing and 20GB of cloud space).

As I understand "cloud synching' will be discontinued on 1 Feb 2024. Think of "Lightroom Classic" as the desktop version of Lightroom. I would make sure your computer can support it. May want to use the trial version prior to subscribing. You may be able to get by with using a lite version of Lightroom or Photoshop. As a recommendation if you enjoy photo editing and you have a computer to support the price of the Photography Plan is definetly worth it.

You understand wrong. Nothing will happen to Lightroom (Classic) cloud syncing. What will be discontinued is the 'Dropbox-like' folder syncing of the 'Creative Cloud Files' folder. The reason is that very few people use this and most people don't even know it exists.

The advances in Lightroom Classic, the one you get with the photographers subscription, is so much more advanced and easier to use that LR 6. If your computer supports it, and do check that first, if you really used and edited photos with Lightroom 6 you will enjoy using LR classic. Be sure to check the system requirements before you purchase..

First up, can you clarify an issue for us. You see their is Lr 6 perpetual (old very very old) and Lr 6 Cloud Based (old, but not that old)/ It is probably a good assumption that you have the prior, but you know what they say about assumptions.

So, in your copy of Lightroom, click on Help, then System Info. Copy the first 5 or so lines, hen paste that into a reply.

Lightroom desktop does not come with a serial number, so the OP is definitely using the ancient Lightroom (Classic) 6.
