    Thanks again nikunj.m for the suggestion. I tried to update the AMD Radeon HD 5770 drivers through Windows. Windows thought about it a while and decided they were up to date. Checked the AMD support site. They agreed. AMD apparently loaded an update at the end of August 2019. That may have caused the problem. My desktop just celebrated its ninth anniversary, so not sure I'm going further since Lightroom Classic is now working fine. Thanks again for all your help. And, thank you all for such great products. Without Lightroom and Photoshop, my life would just be ... less. Keep up the good work.

    I decided to try playing with the GPU setting. I changed my Use Graphics Processor setting from AUTO to OFF. Instantly, the black screen in the Develop Module displayed the image. I tried different images in different catalogs. All work fine. Gotta think this is a minor bug. But, then, I'm a customer, not a developer. To us customers all bugs are minor, i.e. easy to fix. Hopefully, turning off GPU assist doesn't slow Lightroom down too much. Thank you nikunj.m for the suggestion.

    Happy to help and I am glad the suggestion worked. 

     

    If the images are getting displayed with the Graphics Processor OFF, it may be due to old drivers and you can go to AMD's website to check for the latest updates to the Graphic drivers. If there is an update available, install that and then try to switch the Graphic processor back ON in Lightroom Classic.

    I'm also having the problem. From the Library module, selecting an image and pressing D or using the top toolbar and selecting DEVELOP takes me into the Develop module. The image appears on the Navigator box and in the Secondary window (on my second display). The large center workspace is black. Opening a Reference View shows the image on the right side. Pressing D to close the Reference view causes the workspace to return to black. Any changes I make on the black workspace are made to the image. Selecting images from the bottom ribbon changes loads the image to the Develop module, but only shows it in the Navigator and Secondary display. I closed and reopened Lightroom Classic (version 8.4.1). I was able to to get three different images to appear normally in the Develop module. The fourth was black, as were all additional selections. Just for fun, here's my system info. Hope you can help.

    Please share  with us your system information as lightroom reports it. In Lightroom click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste into a reply.

    Are you sure that your subscription has not expired? If your subscription expires, the develop module (and also the map module) ceases to work.

    Hi there,

     

    Would you mind sharing more information about the issue and what happens when you try to open the images in the develop module? Are you not able to see the images in the Develop module or do you get any error when you switch to the Develop module?

     

    Please share the version of Lightroom Classic you are using by going to the Help menu > System info. Also, please share the version of the operating system you are using.

     

    You can try to disable the Graphics card from Lightroom Classic by going to the Preferences for Lightroom Classic > Performance > uncheck the option to Use Graphics Processor (select OFF from the drop down) and then relaunch Lightroom Classic to check if that works.
