Question

Importing images from old LRC Catalog XMP vs. import Catalog function

Hey all,

Since I dont trust my 4 year old LRC Catalog anymore since it crashed/corrupted multiple times this week I made a brand new & fresh one.

Problem is I need to import a few Collections of the old one for the still ongion productions.

What would be the best way to do this? As far as I can see there are 2 options to do that.

Option A:

Just import the pictures and with the help of the XMP files it also applies the rating & editings of said images.

Option B:

Use the "Import form catalog" function where I can just select the folders that I want to import, which then also imports the editing and rating of the images.

Is there a difference between those two options? If yes which?

I've heard that XMP files dont contain ALL editing informations.

I already tried to get the Adobe support to answer me that question, but they didint even understand the question I was asking.

Maybe someone here understands and maybe knows the answer 🙂

If you use the Option B, then any collections you have in the original catalog will be carried across when using Import from catalog.

thats not so important, I can redo the Collections, the most important thing is that I have all the edits and ratings imported.

Oh yeah I already had that "Corruption through cloud" problem 😄 Thats why I stored it on my external SSD. But it has to be the LR Catalog, the SSD is fine (at least with all the tests I did) and it happened on two different computers (one Mac and one Windows) so the Adobe Lightroom Support told me that I should do a new Catalog (which at least for my understanding makes sense since that Catalog is already 3/4 years old with several conversions to newer Lightrooms behind it). Also I switched the SSD, even though the tests said that everything was good. I dont know what else could be the cause.

Repeated catalog corruption is the disk malfunctioning somehow. Or the USB port is bad.

I disagree with this advice. Just because a catalog is "old" does not indicate it is problematic, and the idea of creating a new catalog is to perhaps DIAGNOSE problems, not to use the new catalog as a long term solution.
