Hi Harvey,
That shouldn't be happening, could you please let us know the version of Lightroom and operating system you're working on?
A screenshot of the Lightroom window illustrating the issue would help us.
Thanks,
Akash

Sorry about the delay in my response. What format are these images from iPhone that you're trying to import?
Do you face this issue with every image you work on?

as per Apple tech support: iPhone photo format - HEIF/HEVC,
YES, this occurs on all images. am also sending you info on an already imported iPhone photo.
one other thing - I tried importing iPhone photos to my MacBook air. same results although I was able to adjust the zoom-fill slider to get an image that was not pixelated. however I never had to do that before. and image was very small.

The Import module displays thumbnails that are embedded in the original files.
If these thumbnails are very small or low quality, that could be the cause of the problem.
Since the images display correctly after importing, I wouldn't worry about it.

your correct but it would be nice if I could preview the images in order to
decide which ones to actually import. Has always worked in the past. This
is a recent phenomenon and a drag - gotta import all images and then delete
some.
