Hello, I am new to the Lightroom programs. I have only had my subscription for 2 or 3 months now. So I am still learning a little confused with somethings. I of course have to updated versions of Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC. Is Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC the same as Lightroom 4, 5 & 6? When you create a preset in Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC and save (export) it to your desktop, the file type is .xmp. Is it the same file type in Lightroom 4, 5 and 6?

Adobe marketers have created a masterful, confusing mess with their changing product names. (They're actually paid to be experts in communicating with customers...a good job if you can get it.)

Lightroom Classic (until recently Lightroom Classic CC) is the traditional desktop-focused Lightroom, successor to Lightroom versions 1 - 6, Lightroom CC 2014, and Lightroom CC 2015.  At various times Adobe has included "Photoshop" in these names.  Lightroom Classic will automatically convert catalogs created in those previous versions.

Lightroom CC (with no year following) is the cloud-focused version of Lightroom, including the mobile apps and a desktop version, which all sync seamlessly with each other. (Lightroom Classic sort-of/kind-of syncs with Lightroom CC.)

Hi,

Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC are 2 variants of lightroom. While the former developed on the lines of its ancestor Lightroom 2,3,4,5,6. the later one Lightroom CC is more oriented towards Adobe Cloud services.

There are lots of feature which are common between them and hence no surprise when you export a preset and output is .xmp for both classic and CC Version.

But If you are used to with tradition versions like lightroom 2,3,4,5,6, Lightroom classic would be more familiar and user friendly for you.

Prior to Lightroom Classic 7.2, presets had the extension .lrtemplate.  Starting with 7.2, Adobe changed the format of the presets to .xmp and allowed them to be shared with Camera Raw and Lightroom CC.

Lightroom Classic will automatically convert the .lrtemplate format to .xmp. It's difficult but possible to convert from .xmp back to .lrtemplate for use in the prior versions.
