You can try the following.

Login to your Adobe Account and search under Plans & Products and you should see the products you have registered with the serial numbers displayed.

In the event you do not have an Adobe Account with your products registered then you can do a search for it within the registrary of the Computer where you have LR 5 installed. You should still find it there if it has been uninstalled and you did not manually delete the serial number from your computer.

No to both the above then call Adobe direct for help.

If you have LR 5 still running on one of your computers, you can find the serial number by looking in the location given in this document: Where to find preference files for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5

Which brings up an important point. You need to develop a method of keeping track of ALL of your serial numbers (not just Lightroom) so you never wind up in a situation again where you can't find it. I recommend a text file on your computer with an obvious name, which is backed up to the cloud.

thanks for your reply, I went to his location

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Lightroom\Lightroom 5.0 Registration.lrreg

and it fails.

I tried

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Lightroom\

and it is actually an empty folder... does that make any sense? what can I do about it?

Thanks again

I don't think that will give the complete serial number.

It does give the complete number, and it can be found even if Lightroom has been uninstalled.

At least that's the case with Lightroom 5 on my Windows computer.

Make sure that that Windows is set up to show hidden files and folders.

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder options.

I guess Lightroom is different than other Adobe applications.  I learned something today.
