Lighroom Classic Filter Doesn't Recognize Camera or Lens if Video

Lightroom Classic version: 12.0.1 [ 202210260744-9e008017 ]
License: Creative Cloud
Language setting: en-US
Operating system: Mac OS 12
Version: 12.6.0 [21G115]

Expected Results: When using the Library Filter and searching by Lens, it should show how many photos were done with each lens used.

Actual Results: For a trip where I used two Nikon Z7II cameras and three different NIKKOR Z lens, it didn't recognize the lens or camera for some of the shots, which turned out to be all the videoes shot, using the same lenses.

Manufacturers often do embed the camera and lens information in videos, but there are multiple metadata sections in which they can record them (Quicktime, XMP, Makernotes, EXIF of a JPEG sidecar).  There are industry standards governing Quicktime, XMP, and EXIF metadata, but no unifying standard that tells camera manufacturers which is preferred (as there is for photos).

LR will read the fields from the XMP section of the video file and the EXIF section of a JPEG sidecar (if present).   It doesn't read them from the Quicktime section or the Makernotes.

For this video, Nikon has embedded the information the manufacturer-specific Makernotes:

[MakerNotes] Make : NIKON CORPORATION
[MakerNotes] Model : NIKON Z 7_2
[MakerNotes] Lens Info : 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6
[MakerNotes] Lens Make : NIKON
[MakerNotes] Lens Model : NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S
[MakerNotes] Lens Serial Number : 20012567
[MakerNotes] Lens Type : VR
[MakerNotes] Lens : 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6
[MakerNotes] Lens Data Version : 0801
[MakerNotes] Lens ID : Nikkor Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S

There's no technical reason why LR couldn't read the Makernotes metadata, in the same way that it reads proprietary raw files.  But Adobe has chosen not to expend the effort.

Lightroom does not read camera or lens metadata from video files. It's never been able to do that. I am not even sure whether most cameras embed this info in their video files so this might not be Lightroom specific. My Z7 doesn't appear to do that for example - at least I can't see any of that metadata in the video files it generates in any program.

If you really cared about this, you could use the Exiftool utility to copy the camera and lens information from the Makernotes to the XMP metadata section before importing into LR.

Video is LR's stepchild, and LR has always had issues with video metadata. I suggest you upload a sample video file to Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar and post the sharing link here. That will let us see the precise metadata fields inside the file and provide an easy way for Adobe to reproduce the problem.

I'll also add that in LR, in the metadata the lens and camera fields are blank.
