Lightroom 13.1 Develop module now freezes after update to Lightroom 13.1

I can edit photos in the develop module and if I am editing photo "a", that completes, but when I move to photo "b" and try to edit it, it just goes back to photo "a".  Can't do anything after that.  I have to turn off Lightroom and restart.  Then it works for awhile and does it again.  Never happened until I upgraded to Lightroom 13.1  What is causing this and how do i fix?  I have Windows 11, version 22H2.  I have 16GB of installed RAM and a 1 TB of SSID memory.  It is an Intell i7 processor.

Show us the complete hardware setup for your computer, as seen in Lightroom Classic Help->System Info, down as far as the GPU information (we don't need anything after that).

So:

  • CPU below LrC minimum System requirements of 2GHz
  • RAM at LrC just at recommended minimum System Requirements of 16 GB. Yes Adobe states 8 GB absolute min, but that is being optimistic.
  • A integrated video control w/o any memory of it's own, no Dedicated/Discrete GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM (for display) more like 8 GB for full support such as in AI masking, AI DeNoise
  • And Video control driver (31.0.101.1999) looks to be 2 years old.

I am a bit surprised that LrC v13 would install, perhaps that CPU is a bit faster than reported in that System Information.

I would recommend you inspect that video control driver for a newer one. For an i7, WIN 11, probably v31.0.101.2127

I would recommend that in LrC /preferences/performance/ that you turn use graphics processor OFF.

 1 TB of SSID memory.
...
Library Path: C:\Users\swimw\Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom Catalog-2-2-v13.lrcat

So just the one hard drive, a SSD with 1 TB, This brings up a new inquiry:

Q1) That C drive, how much free space in percent? Looking for at least 20%, some say 25% free.

Thanks for the reply. I bought the current laptop about 2-3 years ago and exceeded the Lightroom reqjirements.

Per your suggestion, I have turned off the graphics processor. It was previously "auto".

The key thing is that this issue only started with version 13.1 and it is random. Everything works well for a while and than for a photo it gets stuck and you have to restart to proceed.

You also recommend inspecting the video control driver for a new one. Not sure how you do that. My Microsoft and Lightroom software are all up to date.

I have 341 GB of free space so over 30%.  I move photos and other data off the SSID drive to a separate external hard drive if the SSID begins to fill up.

Ok, so the reply above had little in terms of determining your issue. Can you post in a reply the following items:

  • A screenshot in Library Module, full screen, with navigator panel visible, folders panel visible , filmstrip with one image selected visible, hopefully name of file visible, Either grid or Loupe view, and Histogram visible.
  • A screenshot in Develop Module with the first desired image selected, Navigator Panel, History Panel (can care less about preset panel) filmstrip, naturally Loupe view, and Histogram visible.
  • A screenshot just like the previous in Develop module, bit with second image selected
  • A video capture of your issue

Not sure how to do what you have asked since it says replies are text only. Plus I think there is a misunderstanding. This is not a situation of photo "a" processed and then photo "b" does not process correctly and shows photo "a" instead. This is random. It happens every few days or even more than once a day, but always with different photos. I can't recreate it once I have closed Lightroom and reopened it. So before I try to provide what you wish, does this change anything about your request.

The driver for your video controller would not be update via Windows Update (theoretically it can with some steps to take, but not practical) But via either the Laptops manufactures support, or Intel.

Typically you go to your laptops mfg web page for support, typically enter info about what laptop, and bring up a drivers support page.

Sometimes a laptop may have come with an application for this sort of thing.

Thanks.  I have a Lenova laptop and they have a support page and it checked and said all my drivers were up to date.

" I have a Lenovo laptop and they have a support page and it checked and said all my drivers were up to date."

The computer manufacturers are notorious for not telling you about the latest graphics drivers.  As GoldingD indicated, your driver (31.0.101.1999) dates from 7/4/2022. LR is very sensitive to bugs in graphics drivers (of which there many), so update your driver by going directly to Intel's web site:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4

While you have a low-end graphics processor, LR should operate correctly doing basic Develop operations.

Thanks for the information.  I went to the Intel site and it says there is a newer driver, but warns that installing it will remove customizations from your computer manufacturer.  Since it is critical that I have the other functionality of my laptop for the next two weeks, unrelated to Lightroom, I will wait two weeks and then do it.  Thanks for the help.
