Lightroom 14 PC performance Issues

New Here ,
Apr 18, 2025 Apr 18, 2025

Hello!

I've been using LR since the beginning and recently I've been facing performance issues, whether it's temporary freezes when handling files in the library or pasting adjustments in the development or importing and exporting images. I use 40Mp Fujifilm cameras and my PC is relatively powerful, with a 4K screen.

Sometimes I'm organizing files in the library, moving them from one folder to another and LR simply freezes, staying several seconds without responding or updating the screen, then it starts working again but it gets slower and slower. When generating previews, it gets very slow to respond, as well as when exporting. Sometimes, navigating the library, the App stop responding or respond slowly and suddenly, responds all at once as my commands got "queued". Sometines it even give me alerts of "Program not responding" before it returns back to life. Other times, It will take a lot of time to export or generate previews and checking taskmanager show it barely using any CPU/GPU poder, like 30% of CPU and I have to quit and fire up again to the App use all processor power again.

All my disks are SSDs and I use separate disks for RAW files, the Catalog/previews and the Adobe Camera RAW cache to get the maximum bandwidth from all disks together. The processor is an i9 13900KF, the video card is an RTX4080S 16Gb and I have 32Gb DDR5 RAM. The SSDs are similar high-performance Samsung 970Evo / WD Black SN850x class disks with agood amount of free space.

When importing, I cannot use the PC as it beguns to be very unresponsive and I have to wait it to import and generate the initial previews. Everything is up to date and the Windows was recently installed as I was trying to troubleshoot the performance issue.

First try to reset the preferences of Lightroom Classic:  How to reset Lightroom Classic preferences (adobe.com)

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/preference-file-and-other-file-locations.html

Another try is to switch off the GPU support from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps to fix the issue. Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html

If it's help see here Troubleshoot GPU issues | Lightroom Classic (adobe.com) and check the different steps.

Check if there's a new version of the graphic device driver available. Make sure that you're download and install the Studio version of the driver. Don't use the Game Ready version.

I had a similar problem and after trying the steps above I restore the catalog from a recent backup. After this LR workrd again without any performance issue. It seems the catalog was faulty.

My System: Intel i7-8700K - 64GB RAM - NVidia Geforce RTX 3060 - Windows 11 Pro 24H2 -- LR-Classic 14 - Photoshop 26 - Nik Collection 8 - PureRAW 5 - Topaz PhotoAI 4

I tried to reset preferences, try nVidia Studio Drivers (even it have the same version as Game Ready), tried disabling all GPU-related options and cleaning catalog, but with any results. Its looks link LR just hangs doing nothing! I commanded to generate standard previews and it start getting unresponsive and generating the previews in a rate of 1 every 10-30s, and looking in the Task Manager, every performance metric was low, like 20-30% CPU use, almost 0% Disks uses, more than 70% of free RAM, and, times over times, it generates a use spike in CPU and generates a couple of previews and returns to the slow pace rate...

Now, it's just stoped at 636/1545 previews about 10 minutes, not advancing, none ressources in use or making anything, just like paused. The interface randomly freezes, gives me a "Not responding" and return from the deads a couple of seconds after but the program itself is working. The Windows was just clean installed, everything up to date, high-end parts and genuine software everywhere...

I think it's time to leave Adobe behind and start looking for alternatives like CaptureOne or similar as I'm out of places to look tho have my performance back, and I dont have a slow PC to settle with this shamefull results 😞

LR may have corrupted your catalog's preview database, which happens infrequently. See here for how to force LR to rebuild it from scratch:

"I'm using a brand new catalog, Everything is new: Windows, Creative Cloud, Drivers, Preferences and catalog"

Nevertheless, it's possible that LR has corrupted the previews database. Try rebuilding it as described in the help article above -- it's easy.

I created a new catalog last night and it's very slow and unresponsive. I've added all Lightroom and Camera Raw related folders to Windows Defender ignore list and all folders are outside Onedrive watched locations...

Strange that I can edit blazing fast content in 4K60 from my drone but the PC turns into a coal-powered machine when using Lightroom...
