Lightroom black and white doesn't carry over to Photoshop

Hello, I've got the most recent versions of Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC. When I make a black and white conversion in Lightroom and then send it to Photoshop I lose the black and white portion of my edit. I retain EVERY other edit, graduated filters, shadows/hightlights, adjustment brushes, even color changes in the HSL box. It's very frustrating, because the ONLY way I can get that edit into photoshop is to export a file to my hard drive and then bypass LR and open that file directly from PS.

In the past I have opened many many B&W conversions from LR to PS with no issues at all...all of my LR edits simply transfer over to PS just as they are supposed to. I think maybe a recent update has messed me up. There was a dialogue box that would pop up asking me about Adobe camera raw, to which I believe I replied "open anyways" instead of "use Lightroom .....something", I wonder if this was it? Now that box doesn't open anymore and I can't find it in the preferences anywhere in LR or PS.

Please help! 😉

Correct answer GoldingD

Your Lightroom is not up to date. In fact it is older than your Photoshop.

Now, as a hunch, please remember that in your Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop application, The copy of Lightroom listed as Lightroom CC IS NOT the desktop version, scroll further down for Lightroom Classic CC.

Oh and in your screenshot, upper right, bell with the number 14, 14 notes to view, might even be one pertaining to this issue.

Hi DavidG. I cannot update Lightroom Classic CC, it shows it as being up to date...

Check your applications folder. Most likely you have both installed, but you are using the old version without even knowing it.

Two things to accomplish, And please reply back in two separate posts as to keep the two answers separate (easier to read)

1. In Lightroom, click on Help, click on System Information, click on copy, past that in reply.

2. In Lightroom, select your images, click edit in lightroom, let Photoshop come up. In Photoshop, do exactly the same, Help/System Information/Copy, and paste into a separate reply.

By the way, in LR, when you click on edit in photoshop, does it include the PS version as CC2019??

The dialog you are referring to is actually a mismatch warning, meaning that you do not have the latest version of Camera Raw. It means you are using an older version of ACR and that is exactly the reason why this happens. Black & White conversions have changed a bit and are now done by profiles. If Lightroom applies a B&W profile and then it sends the image to Photoshop, it tells Photoshop/ACR to use these settings. If the version of ACR is too old, that is not going to work and so a color profile will be applied by ACR. The result is that all (compatible) edits will carry over, but not the B&W conversion. Just like you see.

Do two things: First of all, in the Lightroom preferences - General tab, click on the 'Reset All Warnings' button at the bottom. That will make sure that error comes up again. Secondly, start Photoshop and check the version of Camera Raw. That should be version 11.0 if you are really using the latest version.

Hello JohanEl54,

Thanks for your response. I have been having this problem for a little while now and thought perhaps it was a Adobe Camera Raw mismatch. So before I posted here I wanted to make sure — so I have already updated to the current Adobe Raw version 11.0.0.61. (and have since closed all programs and also shut down my computer and tried again) The problem still persists. I did reset the warnings as you suggested, but I still do not get the mismatch warning, it just opens the file with ALL edits except the B&W edit.

Thanks for your suggestions

You might be opening an older version of Photoshop that is still installed instead of the latest (Photoshop CC 2019). The splash screen has a person holding a mirror in front of their head.

I am sure many of us will look into this further, but right off the top of my head, when the box appears it asks if you want to open the original or with the Lightroom settings you applied. So if you changed to BW in Lightroom and tell it to open without the LR adjustment, then your image should open in PS as it was originally shot.

On the other hand, why the box no longer appears is a question.

My first suggestion would be to quit LR and PS, and then restart both and try again.  I am testing on my end as well.

Hi kentdesign.

Unfortunately, I'm not referring to that particular dialogue box —I'm aware of that one (I think it happens when you are going back and forth from LR to PS with edits) I am talking about the box that refers to Adobe Raw version compatibility issues. I think the reason it doesn't come back is I probably got tired of clicking a response and chose "always do this action/do not ask again"

Thanks very much!
