Lightroom Classic 13.0.1 randomly cropping (destructively) images on import

Hi all,

Longtime veteran of Lightroom and a professional photographer.

As of updating to Lightroom 13.0.1, I'm seeing a problem I've never encountered before.

When choosing to import CR2 RAW images (no JPG and no Embedded), I notice that the aspect ratio is changed on many to most of the images via cropping (See screenshot of import window, all images should be 4x3, but most are seen as 16x9 in the import window).

Upon importing, the images are destructively cropped (i.e. the rest of the image is gone and cannot be recovered in Lightroom).   My recent import from a single photo shoot was about 75 images, shot by me in about an hour.  No camera changes during that hour.

I've rebooted the app, experimented with the various import options (standard, embedded, 1:1).   Any other LR settings that could create a crop problem are set to camera default.  I have also made additional empty catalogs and tried reimporting (same issue).

Help?

Interesting new twist...    I had a product shoot for a longtime client.  Sent the Raw files to his photoshop guy (same client, same photoshop guy, same workflow for the past two years).  PS guy contacted to me ask why I shot the product so close to the edges this time, even cropping off some of the product...  I told him about the Adobe thing I'm running into and he confirmed that he did not see this cropping problem when he opened the same images in a non-adobe app.

As your sceenshot show a filmstrip without file name info, I cannot rule out that some of the images are not JPEG.

Yes, you shoot RAW, but did an in camera setting get fouled up (accidental button press, accidental dial, etc) and you perhaps have a few JPEG images despite IQ setting in camera?

Just checking.

Thanks for checking.   100% raw CR2 files.  No jogs shot at all.  The entire shoot was less than an hour and the only camera changes were shutter and aperture.   This is part of why I think the issue is so interesting. "Consistently random."

Do you have anything active in Prefs>Presets>Raw Defaults?

You said "all images should be 4x3", but that should obviously be 3x2. Do you convert to DNG on import? I also noticed that you do not have the option to save a second copy enabled. Although that has nothing to do with this problem, I would always enable that to have a copy (that may not be affected).

Thanks Johan, yeah, was in a hurry and wrote the wrong aspect ratio... 3:2 it is.

I don't convert to DNG on import... should I?

No, you shouldn't, but when raw files from older cameras are converted to DNG while cropping was set in-camera, then this could crop the resulting DNG. I have never seen Lightroom Classic changing the crop ratio of a proprietary raw file destructively however (and I wonder how that is even possible) so I have no idea what happened here.
