Lightroom Classic 13.5.1 unusably slow since moving to Windows 11

Pretty much as described above. I have been using LR Classic for many years. In the past I have experienced slow performance but this was almost always fixed with an upgrade of graphics drivers. Now the whole program is sluggish even with the latest drivers. Loading into the interface takes upwards of 1 minute and then every action has a delay of 5-10 seconds. Sometimes the screen will grey out for no reason. Even preferences takes upwards of 30 seconds to open. There are also 5 NEF files trying to sync when everyhting esle on the cloud is scynhronised properly.

Should say LR CC for desktop works fine.

OK. Update. Had a little time to play around this morning... the program behaves normally in safe mode and safe mode with networking. So the theory that it's a driver issue is back in play. Question now is how to work out which of the hundreds of possibilities it might be. Am still thinking that the win 11 NVIDIA driver might be the issue looking at other posts on this forum.

Actually try creating a brand new Windows user account first. Their might be an issue with your current account. When you do, take this opportunity to create a local user account, not a MS account..

Creating a local account, especially well after setting up Windows, can be a bit tricky. One trick is to disconnect the computer from the Internet before creating the account. When Windows complains about that during the account creation, you can tell MS to pound sand (actually nope no Internet)

that part: apf10.DESKTOP-M94B0S0

I find that very odd. Is something wrong with a folder on your hard drive? Is that in actuality your Pictures folder? Is that a registry name for your folder?

Oh, wait a sec:

Settings Folder: C:\Users\apf10.DESKTOP-M94B0S0\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom

So, not your Pictures folder, but a userr folder . Is that your Windows userr name??

Thanks for this. I think I previosuly had my LR Cat stored on the root drive C:\LRCat or similar, but moved it back at some point. Will try this though.

Edit: Just tested and it is still painfully slow - even the number of files in each folder takes an age to load in. Impacts the rest of the system too. Everything takes agres to work.

As for the weird naming. At some point in the distant past there was an error with my PC. When it was all repaired, my whole user profile had been duplicated somehow into this new one. So I now have a very old Users\apf102\... and a newer one with their weird addition of my Desktop computer name. It has never caused an issue so I just left it alone. Has been like it since about 2020.

Methinks a clean install might be on the cards...

There is some debate (an unfortuantly a lack of actual technical documentation) that a library path that includes OneDrive in it, indicates that OneDrive is in use with your catalog and maybe your photo storage. At the very least some automatic sync to your OneDrive cloud storage is in effect. This can IMO slow LrC down, especially on a bad day (poor Internet, slow Internet, over burdened MS servers, etc)

I basically blame this on MS in that they strong arm users into creating MS accounts for their Windows computers (I think this predates WIN 11, but it has gotten worse at Windows 11). AND as such, forces that OneDrive upon you.

What occurs when you use a MS account, is all the Special System Library Folders (like Pictures, Videos, Documents, Downloads, etc) get sync to OneDrive.

Note, your folder "apf10.DESKTOP-M94B0S0" is odd, something going wrong with your FAT on that hard drive?

Moving on, One thing to try is to create a new folder that is not named Pictures. Name it anything you like, perhaps MyPhotography, or MyLightroom, or Rumpelstiltskin, anything other than an existing folder). And move your catalog to that folder. And see what happens.  (you may find that some or more photos go missing, The link below would help with that)

In this community, their is at least one post that states that using OneDrive and LrC is made in heaven. That post is replying to as in "NO made in Hell". Their are many other posts about LrC/OneDrive issues. Some very con OneDrive, some  pro OneDrive.

16 GB of RAM is stated by Adobe to be the recommended minimum for RAM in lrC. (they actually state LrC will work with just 8 GB). BUT, those minimums may present performance limitations. From your listed GPU, tour computer appears to be a workstation (a.k.a Desktop). You may want to consider increasing the RAM.

3 GB of VRAM while stated by ADOBE to be adequate (they go for 2 GB) it is not adequate for anything in LrC that is considered advanced. Any AI is included as advanced. And the performance will take a hit. In fact some items like Denoise AI may be so bad as to be useless. You may want to consider replacing that GPU. many think that 8 GB of VRAM is the minimum to go for, and more is better.

My PC is definitely not the latest. However the 16gb and gfx were working fine until recently. Not stellar but not awful. Looking at the resource use there is plenty of free ram when LR is running it looks much more like some sort of conflict. Wondering if the wins 11 graphics drivers are not right?
