Question

Lightroom Classic 8.4.1 is crashing randomly on iMac while importing

Using classic 8.4.1 on a new iMac. LR is repeatedly crashing when importing images and when editing. It is idiosyncratic i.e. I can edit for 15 minutes and then it will crash; I can import fine and then the next time it will crash. This happened with 8.4 as well. Sometimes it crashes the computer as well i.e. not just the program. I have tried enabling and disabling the Graphics Processor and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have run the Apple diagnostics (press D when restarting) and no errors were reported. The iMac has the AMD Radeon Pro Vega 48 (8 GB) video processor.

Would really appreciate any help with troubleshooting this.

One oddity to attempt, in the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop, sign out, then sign back in, I cannot remember what this resolves, probably some issue with connectivity to the Adobe Servers, including authentication.

Now that tip usually relates to other issues, installing updates probably the main one.

And if you were in fact signed in and this fixes, perhaps some odd busy body thing going on (wonder if just signing out would resolve?

But this is just a wild guess, a what if .

Just reviving this thread from a few weeks back to see whether anyone has any further input. LR is still crashing randomly and most often causes the computer itself to crash too; it is happening most often while editing. I have tried everything that has been suggested including trashing the Preferences file.

If your computer is crashing then, if you have not already started, you should start testing the hardware components of your computer. I would suggest you start with the RAM modules it could be that one is failing this may only manifest problems when the system is put under stres like when Lightroom is doing taxing functions in the develop module.

Interesting, something about this new web site appears to be causing a bit of a hitch when system information is pasted, takes out the line returns. Not sure if that is in replies to replies.

I have replyed using the reply button on the first posting istead of on a reply on purpose. I avoid that one line issue, and I avoid the ugl gray background as such

I have taken a bit of liberty and reformatted your reply as posted below

So yes LR Classic 8.4.1. check

So MAC OS 10.14.6, and build 18G95. So yu have applied the suppimental update. check

Display Res at 5K, not the crash issue, performance issue??? Acceleration supposed to fix

And Lightroom is using Metal, not the older OpenGL. check

Nothing odd abouth the paths. check

Nothing odd or suspect about the plug-ins. Well unless your Facebook page is commercial, that Facebook Plugin has no use, but not the issue.

Nope not a clue as to causation

Thanks David! (I've already disabled the Facebook, Flickr and Nikon plugins, not that they were the culprits I imagine; no idea how they got there as I don't use them!)

And. one item that often comes up when looking at possible solutions documented online, and in user recommendations, is the possibility that your Lightroom Class preference file is corrupt. This happens. Odd behavior occurs when it happens.

Also, as you stated that your catalog is on the internal drive. How much free space in % remains on that drive?

Please share your system information as Lightroom Classic reports it.

In Lightroom Classic, click on Help. then System Information, then Copy

    Paste that in your reply.

    Hi there,

Sorry that Lightroom Classic 8.4.1 is crashing repeatedly. That shouldn't be happening, let us make it right.

As Lightroom is running crashing, could you please try importing images from a different location like your desktop and also check what is the destination set to?

    Thanks,

    Akash

The crashes don't just happen on import. They happen when editing. Images are all on an external drive connected by Thunderbolt 3. Catalog files are all on the internal drive.

This is pretty lousy outcome for you David. I hope we can help.

Have you been able to create Catalogs / edit images / backup Catalogs on any previous versions of LR Classic in your journey?

Any chance of a screen shot of the errors encountered?
