Question

Lightroom Classic almost unusable - running so slowly

In the last few months, my Lightroom Classic has become practically unusable. Import is slow, previews render in minutes, not split seconds. I'm moving to a higher megapixel camera and will have to give up on LR soon if I can't find a solution. I've used it since LR 1.0 so it's not unfamiliar to me.

My catalog is on an external SSD plugged into a USB C on the back of the PC. The application is on my internal C drive (1TB SSD) with 55% free space. RAM 64GB. The images are on a Synology NAS. The PC is a Dell Alienware R9, CPU i9-9990@3.1GHz, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB, running Win 11 Pro.

My catalog contains about 360,000 images.

I've read many pieces of advice on the topic on adobe.com and elsewhere and am getting nowhere. So, this site will hopefully give me new sets of eyes on the problem and come up with something I haven't tried yet.

I just ran "Find all missing photos" and got about 42,000. So, obviously, that's a problem to tackle - but what effect would that have on loading the catalog and rendering previews?

TIA for all suggestions.

Perfectly Ok, but how much free space in % on that drive?

This may or may not effect import, when you import, are you selecting to ADD, or to Copy?

Are the images already on the NAS, and you just need to ADD them at import into the catalog?

or

Are they on your cameras card, and you Copy them at import, locating them (destination) on the NAS?

Is this more of a missing folder issue? Instead of fixing the location if image after image, can it be a simpler folder location issue? Lots easier to correct the folder.

>>Are they on your cameras card, and you Copy them at import, locating them (destination) on the NAS?<<

When I import from my camera's card, I COPY them at import and the destination is the NAS.

Occasionally, I have photos that are already on my NAS but have not been imported into LRC, then I use ADD.

The import is slower than I'd like, and the rendering of previews (I usually use Embedded & Sidecar) is way slower than I'd like.

The other problem is when I open LR and wish to work in a particular folder. Scrolling through the images to evaluate for keepers or more work is so slow after the first 1 or 2 as to be crazy-making. I want to be able to see at least a minimal preview quickly instead of having to wait for the "Loading...." to stop.

Thank you for the link to the "Find Folder" discussion - that should be faster. There's no way I can go through that many photo by photo!!

You stated "  I want to be able to see at least a minimal preview quickly instead of having to wait for the "Loading...." to stop. "

Are you working in the Develop Module? If so you should be working in the Library Module where previews are utilized.
