Lightroom Classic CC does not recognize my photos on my laptop or external drive

Question

I just downloaded Lightroom Classic CC (version 8.1), and tried to import photos from my external drive.  When I do that, I can choose the folders on the drive, and the folders show up, but no photos. (The photos are definitely there; I can bring them up using different programs)  I have exactly the same problem if i copy the files to the hard drive of my laptop, and then try to import them.  I have copied photos into different folders on the hard drive of my laptop and tried to import them.  Again, the name of the folders show up, but the photos do not, so I can't import them.  What can I do to solve this? (Using Windows) Thanks.

Can you show us a screen capture of the entire Import dialog box when this happens?

As a wild guess, the Destination Panel is not expanded, or it is pointing to an invalid folder (a folder that doesn't exist).

I am having the same problem with a Mac laptop. I don't understand what you mean by "destination Panel was not expanded"? My Source file that I know the images are in "is not expanding", but I did put them there and can find them in the finder? The destination file is the same location as I am Adding them where they are. Is the top right of the screen suppose to be expanded?
